Green’s four-for, de Kock’s grit lift Tridents toward playoffs

The Barbados Tridents have transformed their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) fortunes in the space of two matches, climbing from last place into the playoff picture after South Africans Chris Green and Quinton de Kock delivered the decisive blows in a tense four-wicket victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Kensington Oval on Thursday.

Green’s four-wicket demolition with the ball and de Kock’s composed unbeaten 44 steadied the Tridents after another shaky start and carried them to 120 for six with 12 balls to spare.

The victory lifted Barbados to eight points and fourth place, with two regular-season matches still to play against the Jamaica Kingsmen and Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The equation is now straightforward: one more victory guarantees the Tridents a place in the top four.

Two defeats, however, could still leave their playoff hopes dependent on net run rate.

For the Patriots, there is no such uncertainty.

Their 118 for 9 was followed by defeat, officially eliminating them from the competition and extending their playoff drought to five consecutive years.

Green turns the game with a devastating spell

The foundation for the Tridents' victory was laid almost immediately after Green opted to bowl first.

The Patriots could hardly have made a worse start.

Green bowled Johnson Charles for a duck with the second delivery of the match, while Daniel Sams removed Kyle Mayers, also without scoring, in the following over. St Kitts and Nevis had collapsed to 0 for 2 before they had any chance to settle.

Green then struck again, bowling Andre Fletcher for four before Alick Athanaze was caught for 16.

At 27 for 4 in the seventh over, the Patriots were in serious trouble.

There was little respite.

Green trapped Dasun Shanaka lbw for six, and Gudakesh Motie dismissed Jason Holder two deliveries later. Suddenly, the Patriots were 51 for 6 and staring at a total that appeared unlikely to challenge.

Green finished with 4 for 20, earning Player-of-the-Match honors, while Sams claimed 2 for 21 and Motie 2 for 30.

Hasaranga gives Patriots something to defend

Wanindu Hasaranga briefly changed the complexion of the innings.

With the Patriots' top order dismantled, Hasaranga counterattacked, blasting 45 from only 25 balls to drag his team into three figures.

His assault gave St Kitts and Nevis 118 from their 20 overs, a modest total, but one that suddenly offered at least a chance of putting pressure on a Tridents batting lineup that had struggled for consistency.

That pressure arrived immediately.

De Kock refuses to let Barbados slip

The Tridents' chase began disastrously.

Holder struck with the third ball, having Brandon King caught behind without scoring. Three deliveries later, Rivaldo Clarke edged another outswinger from the tall pacer through to the wicketkeeper.

At 4 for 2, Barbados was already in trouble.

Zachary Carter responded with successive boundaries off Holder, but his stay was short-lived. Attempting to pull a short delivery, Carter picked out deep square leg, where Hasaranga held a good catch.

The Tridents were 27 for 3, and a chase that should have been routine was suddenly anything but.

That was when de Kock took control.

Experience carries Tridents through the danger

Rather than attempting to force the pace, de Kock relied on experience and percentage cricket, gradually dismantling the Patriots' challenge.

He first added 38 runs with Shadrack Descarte, providing the stability Barbados desperately needed.

After Descarte's dismissal, de Kock found another willing partner in Sherfane Rutherford. Their 39-run fifth-wicket partnership, with Rutherford contributing 23, pushed the Tridents into relative safety.

De Kock remained unbeaten on 44 from 43 balls, his controlled innings proving crucial in a chase that had become considerably more difficult than the target suggested.

Even after Rutherford and Green departed, Barbados kept its composure.

Sams provided the finishing touch, launching Nivan Bidaisee over long off for six to end the contest at 120 for 6 with two overs remaining.

One win now separates Tridents from the playoffs

The victory represents a remarkable turnaround for Barbados, which had been sitting at the bottom of the standings just two matches earlier.

Now in fourth, the Tridents control their own immediate destiny.

Beat either the Jamaica Kingsmen or Guyana Amazon Warriors, and they will secure a playoff berth.

For the Patriots, Thursday's defeat brought another season to a definitive end.

For Barbados, it could prove to be the victory that rescued an entire campaign.
