GFF and coach Jamaal Shabazz split after difficult Nations League run

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has parted ways with head coach Jamaal Shabazz, citing a series of unsatisfactory performances from the Golden Jaguars national team.

The GFF, in an announcement on Wednesday, expressed appreciation for Shabazz’s years of dedication and for helping advance Guyanese football.

“Guyana Football Federation announces the termination of its contract with Jamaal Shabazz, head coach of the Golden Jaguars men’s national team,” the statement said. “We are thankful for his contributions and his leadership in helping the team reach significant achievements that will have lasting impact.”

Actively searching for new leadership

During Shabazz’s tenure, the Golden Jaguars achieved a notable promotion from League B to League A in the CONCACAF Nations League, building on regional and international recognition for Guyanese football. GFF extended gratitude to Shabazz, acknowledging the ways he has inspired young talent and loyal fans across the nation.

Looking ahead, the GFF stated they are actively searching for new leadership to help guide the Jaguars as they strive to achieve their long-term goals.

Shabazz returned to the Golden Jaguars in September 2021 for an unprecedented fourth term as head coach, having previously led from 2005–2009, 2011–2012, and 2015–2016. Despite previous successes, Shabazz faced a challenging 2024 CONCACAF Nations League season, with the team ultimately being relegated to League B after failing to secure a single win in League A.
