Four Grenadians recognized in King Charles III’s 2024 Birthday Honours

King Charles III has honored four distinguished Grenadians in his 2024 Birthday Honours, celebrating their exceptional contributions to government, community, education, and entrepreneurship.

Distinguished service in governance and community

Joan Purcell has been appointed as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in recognition of her extensive service to government and community. 

Born in Carriacou, Purcell’s political journey includes significant roles such as Deputy Political Leader and later Political Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). 

Her political career is marked by her tenure as President of the Senate from 2008 to 2013 and a period as Acting Prime Minister, reflecting her impactful contributions to her nation’s governance.

Community and education advocates recognized

Agnes Dorothy Lessey has been named a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for her dedicated service to the community, acknowledging her efforts to enhance the social fabric of her surroundings. 

Additionally, Elizabeth Forsyth has been awarded the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for her commitment to advancing education, a testament to her influence in shaping the educational landscape.

Fostering entrepreneurship in the fishing industry

The honours list also includes Gerard Bethel, who received the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for his entrepreneurial services to the fishing industry. 

His recognition underscores the importance of innovation and leadership within the sector, contributing to its growth and sustainability.

The Birthday Honours list is a revered tradition that highlights the extraordinary service of individuals to the United Kingdom and its international interests, celebrating those who have made significant impacts in their fields and communities.
