Miami-Dade County Public Schools will host the 2017 Francisco R. Walker Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year dinner to name the most outstanding teacher throughout the District on Thursday, January 28, at 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport & Convention Center. The 2016 Rookie Teacher of the Year also will be chosen.

The four teachers of the year finalists, the areas they represent and their schools are listed as follows:


  • North – Precious Tyesia Symonette, Miami Norland Senior High School

  • Central – Michelle Kelly, Miami Springs Senior High School

  • South – Lema Gilliard, Medical Academy for Science and Technology, MAST @ Homestead

  • Adult/Vocational/Alternative Education  – Gina Graham, Juvenile Justice Center


The 2016 Rookie Teacher of the Year finalists are listed as follows:

  • North – Emmanuela T. Louis, Scott Lake Elementary School

  • South – Rachael Taryn Kraemer, Robert Morgan Educational Center

  • Central – Mia Esposito, Lenora B. Smith Elementary School
