The new three-story headquarters on Broward Boulevard spans approximately 191,000 square feet and replaces the police department’s aging former facility.
City officials say the building will significantly expand the department’s ability to investigate crimes, train officers and maintain operations during major emergencies while also providing new spaces for the public.
The headquarters includes evidence laboratories, training rooms and a shooting range, as well as technology designed to help investigators process and analyze evidence.
Police Chief Bill Schultz highlighted the department’s expanded forensic capabilities, including technology that allows investigators to analyze ballistic evidence.
The facility also includes a secure space dedicated to examining electronic devices such as cellphones, laptops and computers, providing investigators with resources that were not available at the department’s previous headquarters.
The building was also designed to withstand South Florida’s severe weather. City officials say the headquarters is rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, allowing the police department to continue critical operations during major storms and other emergencies.
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said the facility is expected to serve as a central hub for both the police department and the wider community.
The headquarters includes space for public use, including a community center. City officials said the facility will also host city commission meetings while Fort Lauderdale’s new city hall is under construction.
