Electric bicycle riders in Fort Lauderdale could face new age limits, registration requirements and restrictions on where they can ride under proposed rules expected to be approved by the end of 2026.

City commissioners are considering the measures in response to an increase in crashes involving electric bicycles, with the proposed rules also covering electric scooters, e-skateboards, hoverboards and Onewheels.

Under the proposals, riders would have to be at least 16 years old, carry government-issued photo identification and register their devices with the city. Registered devices would also be required to display a registration decal at all times.

The proposed rules would also prohibit the use of the devices on certain areas within city parks, including pathways and recreational trails, athletic fields and turf areas, plazas and promenades.

Violators would face a $250 fine for a first offense and $500 for subsequent violations.

Electric bicycles, commonly known as e-bikes, use an electric motor and rechargeable battery to assist riders. Depending on the model, they can reach maximum speeds of 20 mph or 28 mph.

The proposed regulations come amid growing concerns about the safety of e-bikes and other micromobility devices as their popularity increases.

If approved, the rules would establish new requirements for riders and restrictions on device use in Fort Lauderdale. City commissioners are expected to finalize the measures before the end of the year, ahead of their anticipated implementation in 2027.
