Former Bahamas PM seeks to reclaim leadership of Free National Movement
Former Bahamas Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis is gearing up to reclaim his position as the leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), signaling a significant return to the political forefront.
Reports are that a notice to the media on Thursday indicated that Minnis will officially file his nomination documents to compete for the political leader post in next month’s leadership election at 11 am on Friday.
Minnis previously helmed the FNM from May 9, 2012, until November 27, 2021, orchestrating the party’s ascent to governmental power.
Under his leadership, the FNM clinched a remarkable victory in the 2017 General Election, securing 35 out of 39 seats in parliament, effectively unseating Prime Minister Perry Christie and the Progressive Labour Party.
Triumphs and trials
Despite his initial successes, Minnis’ tenure as prime minister was marked by formidable challenges.
The Bahamas grappled with the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, one of the most powerful storms on record, followed swiftly by the onset of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Political fortunes shift
As his term progressed, Minnis faced growing discontent, culminating in a snap election in September 2021, which resulted in his removal from office.
Following his electoral defeat, Minnis stepped down from the political leadership position.
A new era dawns
With Minnis’ departure, Michael Pintard assumed the mantle of leadership at the subsequent convention, securing a notable 67 per cent of the votes cast.
FNM members will elect a new leader at a one-day convention on June 1.
