In a recent development, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the state’s top health official have taken a stance against the benefits of the new COVID booster shot.

Debating federal health guidelines

DeSantis and Florida Surgeon, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, recently engaged in a discussion on X, the digital platform previously recognized as Twitter, to address their concerns regarding the vaccine.

This follows their previous remarks made in Jacksonville, expressing reservations about the new booster that was recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

DeSantis remarked, “This has obviously been a flashpoint in our society,” DeSantis said Wednesday. “In Florida, we've obviously taken a different approach.”

Opposing views on health recommendations

Dr. Ladapo, known for his previous warnings against COVID-19 vaccines, expressed his skepticism about the paths taken by the CDC and FDA.

He stated, “We continue to live in world where the CDC and the FDA, when it comes to COVID at least, are just beating their own path in a direction that’s inexplicable in terms of thinking about data and in thinking about common sense.”

Who is Joseph Ladapo?

Having earned his medical degree and a Ph.D. in health policy from the esteemed Harvard University, Ladapo’s qualifications are not in dispute.

Before his appointment by Governor DeSantis in September 2021, he was affiliated with UCLA as a doctor and health policy researcher.

His tenure in Florida, however, has been marked by contentious decisions and alignment with Governor DeSantis, especially in opposition to COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
