Florida motorists grapple with soaring gas prices

Florida motorists are feeling the pinch as they pull up to the pump, facing yet another surge in fuel costs.

Over the past week alone, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded has skyrocketed by 8 cents, while over the past month, it has climbed by 21 cents.

Summer blend shift and maintenance drive costs up

The AAA auto club revealed that on Monday, the average gallon of regular unleaded in Florida hit $3.58.

This uptick comes as the industry transitions to the pricier summer gasoline blend and refineries undertake scheduled maintenance.

Global tensions fanning the flames of price surge

Speculation surrounding the implications of Ukraine’s targeting of Russia’s oil infrastructure has played a pivotal role in recent price hikes, according to AAA spokesman Andrew Gross.

While concerns regarding these geopolitical tensions have somewhat subsided, they have left an enduring mark on gas prices, which are now following a trajectory akin to last year’s gradual seasonal increase.

Global oil supply struggles tighten the noose

Adding to the pressure at the pump is the tightening global oil supply.

Despite the United States ramping up its oil production to record levels, OPEC+ has opted to extend production cuts, effectively reducing global supplies and bolstering oil prices, as noted in AAA’s recent news release.

Regional disparities in fuel costs

Florida's average gas price of $3.58 a gallon on Monday stands 10 cents higher than it did just a year ago.

However, disparities persist across the state, with the Panhandle enjoying the lowest average prices, such as $3.21 a gallon in the Panama City area.

In stark contrast, motorists in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area are grappling with an average price of $3.77 a gallon.
