Marlin Wakeman, a 24-year-old from Stuart, Florida, is on the path to recovery following a terrifying shark attack at a marina in the Bahamas.

The incident occurred last month when Wakeman, attempting to jump onto a docked boat at the Flying Fish Marina on Long Island, lost his footing and plunged into shark-infested waters.

Within moments of falling, he suffered a bite on his leg from what is believed to have been a Caribbean reef shark. Almost immediately, another shark struck his shoulder, escalating the peril of his situation.

Action saves a life

The quick thinking of the boat’s captain, who immediately applied a tourniquet to Wakeman’s leg, played a crucial role in preventing further blood loss.

Wakeman was then rushed to a local clinic before being airlifted to St Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, for surgical intervention.

Medical insights and prognosis

Dr. Robert Borrego, the trauma surgeon who treated Wakeman, noted that the shark bite punctured the kneecap and narrowly missed a major artery.

The surgeon estimated the shark to be approximately 7 feet long based on the size of the bite mark.

Despite the severity of the injuries, medical professionals are optimistic about Wakeman’s recovery, anticipating a return to full health.
