Florida gas prices expected to decrease

As May draws to a close, Florida sees an average gasoline price of $3.50 per gallon, with prospects of further decreases anticipated during the summer months, depending on the impact of the upcoming hurricane season.

The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Florida showed a slight decline of one cent from the previous week and a seven-cent drop from last month, as reported by AAA.

The trend indicates a potential reduction in fuel costs over the summer, provided that the hurricane season and potential refinery outages do not disrupt this trajectory.

Impact of the hurricane season

The hurricane season, commencing this Saturday, is expected to be busier than usual with an above-average number of storms predicted.

Such meteorological activity could influence gasoline supply lines and prices, although the exact impact remains to be seen.

Expert insights

Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, expressed optimism about the downward trend in gasoline prices.

In a recent statement on the X social media platform, he mentioned that, barring unforeseen disruptions from natural events or refinery issues, gasoline prices are likely to decrease each month throughout the summer, potentially dropping below $3 by year’s end.

However, De Haan clarified that his references were to national averages and might not reflect the prices at local stations.

Regional variations within Florida

Gasoline prices in Florida are not uniform and vary significantly across different regions. For instance, drivers in the Panhandle area typically enjoy the lowest prices, while those in South Florida, especially in Palm Beach County, face the highest.

On Tuesday, prices ranged from $3.21 per gallon in the Crestview-Fort Walton Beach area to $3.69 in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area. In comparison, the national average stood at $3.59 per gallon.
