FDLE and BSO investigate deputy-involved shooting in Pompano Beach

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) says they are investigating the non-fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday in Pompano Beach.

According to reports shortly after 9:30 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting shots fired near the 700 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue in Pompano Beach. Broward Sheriff Office (BSO) district deputies responded.

According to the investigators, when the deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered a man armed with a semi-automatic rifle. When the deputies began their approach, the suspect shot at the deputies, two deputies returned fire striking him. The deputies immediately began providing medical attention to the suspect.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. The suspect has been identified as 51-year-old Scott Simonelli. He now faces one count of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer and two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation at this time. FDLE will be investigating the use of force aspect of this incident, while BSO will be investigating the criminal actions of Simonelli.

BSO said per their policy, the two deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
