The Excelsior High School Past Students’ Association celebrated the 93rd Anniversary of the establishment of the esteemed institution, which took place on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
This significant milestone was commemorated through the Annual Founder’s Day Church Service and Brunch, which were held within the school’s hallowed halls at 137 Mountain View Avenue, Kingston 3 in Jamaica.
The day’s program commenced with a church service at 9:00 a.m., followed by brunch at 11:30 a.m.
Honoring Dr. The Hon. A. Wesley Powell, OD
Under the theme, “A Dream In Motion,” this event paid homage to the legacy of the remarkable educator, innovator, and humanitarian, Dr. The Hon. A. Wesley Powell, OD, who established the institution on January 19, 1931.
Dr. Powell’s visionary leadership challenged conventions, advocating that education should be a fundamental right accessible to every Jamaican child, regardless of their social class, ethnicity, or financial means.
With just five students and a modest location at 8 Hampton Street, Campbell Town, he laid the foundation for what would become one of Jamaica’s premier educational institutions.
Today, Excelsior High School stands tall as a symbol of Dr. Powell’s unwavering dream, bearing the motto “Age Animo,” which translates to “Do it with thy might!” The institution continues to evolve and expand, offering diverse educational opportunities to individuals spanning from early childhood to adulthood.
A celebration of talent and generosity
The festivities of the Founder’s Day celebration were further enhanced by performances from a lineup of some of the institution’s most illustrious alumni and Jamaica’s finest talents.
The stage featured renowned pianist and jazz singer, Harold Davis, the dynamic ensemble of DeMario McDowell and Friends, the soulful melodies of Pam Hall, the graceful moves of dancer Kymmone Ennis, and the musical prowess of Recording Artist Shawn Antoine, among other outstanding acts.
Proceeds to benefit scholarship fund
One of the central aims of this event was to raise funds for the Excelsior High School’s Scholarship Fund, with a particular focus on supporting financially disadvantaged students.
For those members of the Excelsior community residing in the Diaspora or were unable to attend, there was an option to donate their meal to a chosen family member or individual.
Tickets for this celebratory occasion were priced at $5,000.
