Eight more bodies recovered as Guyana intensifies search for MV Barima victims

Eight more bodies have been recovered as search and rescue operations continue following the sinking of the MV Barima, bringing the total number of confirmed bodies recovered from the tragedy to 10.

The Government of Guyana said that as of 12:35 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, the bodies were recovered during an intensified operation involving 13 assets deployed by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre from first light.

The identification process is being carried out with the involvement of relatives at the Suddie Hospital. Authorities said bodies recovered during the operation will be transported to Charity for processing by health and police officials before families are invited to assist with identification.

The government said the search operation has now moved into full recovery mode after authorities and local partners confirmed the location of the MV Barima.

The vessel’s possible location was identified at 1:31 p.m. by fisherman Haresh Singh, who had assisted in rescue efforts following the incident. Support from local fisherfolk and the privately owned vessel Gilligan Island also helped authorities confirm the location.

The French Government has provided additional assistance, deploying 15 divers to join local dive teams at the site.

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Monday assured the nation that all available resources were being mobilised as authorities continued the rescue and recovery mission.

In a national address, Ali praised the efforts of government agencies, emergency personnel, volunteers, fishermen, community members and international partners involved in the response, describing the operation as a demonstration of national unity during a time of tragedy.

"This has been a truly national effort in a time of profound national anguish," Ali said, commending those who have worked around the clock to assist in the recovery effort.

The president assured affected families that the government would continue deploying resources until every possible avenue had been exhausted.

"Every available asset is being deployed. Every agency is working around the clock," he said.

Ali also pledged that a full and independent investigation would be launched once recovery efforts are completed to determine the circumstances surrounding the sinking.

"The families affected, and indeed the people of Guyana, deserve answers. They deserve to know what happened, precisely what transpired and whether any failures contributed," he said.

The president urged citizens to continue supporting affected families and communities as the country prepares to enter a period of official mourning.

"It is going to be a difficult period for us as a people and as a country," Ali said, calling for unity, compassion and support for those affected by the tragedy.
