A driver is facing charges after authorities say he attempted to flee the scene of a fatal crash in Pompano Beach on New Year's Eve. The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, near the 3000 block of Copans Road.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, 24-year-old Jacques Malik Mayfield was driving a white Audi Q7 when he entered the path of an electric scooter, which was traveling near the bicycle lane. The collision resulted in the death of the scooter rider, and Mayfield allegedly attempted to leave the scene before being apprehended by authorities. Investigators are continuing to gather information as they pursue charges in connection with the crash.

Lokesley Myrthil, who was riding the electric scooter, collided with the windshield of the white Audi Q7 before being thrown onto the roadway, according to authorities. He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

After the crash, Mayfield continued driving but eventually stopped the Audi. He and his passengers then fled the scene on foot. However, officers from the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) and Coconut Creek Police quickly located Mayfield and one of his passengers as they attempted to get into a rideshare. The two men were taken into custody without further incident. Mayfield is now facing charges in connection with the fatal crash.
