Police in Dominica are investigating the death of a medical practitioner whose body was found in a pool of blood at her home in Goodwill, on the outskirts of the capital Roseau, on Friday.

Police believe the death of Dr. Velma Valmond, the island’s 17th murder this year, is as a result of domestic violence.

Police Inspector, Fixton Henderson, told reporters that law enforcement officials had responded “to a report of domestic violence between a woman and her boyfriend” and on arrival at the residence found the body of the 35-year-old woman “in a pool of blood with a severe laceration across her neck”.

Henderson said the victim was examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor and her body was transported to a funeral home where it is awaiting an autopsy.

“Velma’s boyfriend, 32 year old boyfriend, Alexander, as also found on the floor ….and in a state of distress,” Henderson said, adding “he was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Dominica China Friendship Hospital and is in a stable condition.”

The police said Dr. Valmond’s 18-year-old daughter is also nursing injuries that were apparently sustained during the incident and is also in stable condition at the hospital.
