Distin named Texas A&M Female Athlete of the Year at school’s legacy awards

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lamara Distin added another accolade to her impressive collection by being named the Texas A&M Female Athlete of the Year at the school’s annual Legacy Awards on Monday.

The Legacy Awards commend Texas A&M student-athletes for their achievements in various academic, service, leadership, and athletic pursuits from March 2023 to March 2024.

Distin, a two-time Jamaican national champion, showcased her dominance in the SEC and NCAA high jump arena by securing a pair of SEC titles at the 2023 Outdoor and 2024 Indoor Championships, elevating her career tally to five SEC high jump titles.

Notable successes with two runner-up finishes

She achieved notable successes with two runner-up finishes at the 2023 outdoor and 2024 indoor national championships, earning her fifth and sixth First-Team All-America honors, respectively.

A standout moment occurred at the 2024 SEC Indoor Championships when the 24-year-old shattered the NCAA Indoor high jump record, soaring over the bar at 2.00m. This achievement marked her as the first collegiate woman to clear the 2.00m mark indoors or outdoors.

Lamara Distin’s remarkable performances throughout the year undoubtedly earned her the prestigious title of Texas A&M Female Athlete of the Year, solidifying her status as a standout athlete within the university's athletic program.
