Jamaican-American Denise Grant was elected Mayor of the City of Lauderhill in elections held in that city on Tuesday, November 5.

Grant won by a convincing 62.69 percent of the votes cast over her rival Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin who received 37.31 percent.

Denise Grant has served on the Lauderhill City Commission since November 2018. In 2020, she was elected as Vice Mayor of the city. She gained the respect of her constituents by championing impactful community programs, policies, and initiatives, earning her numerous awards and accolades. In addition to her role as Commissioner, Grant also serves on various governmental boards, including the National League of Cities Human Development committee.

Popular WAVS 1170 radio broadcaster, Jamaican-American John T. Hodgkins also won a seat to the City of Lauderhill Commission, gaining 33.87 of the vote.

Another Jamaican-American, Mark Douglas, a former City of Sunrise commissioner who challenged incumbent Mike Ryan for mayor of the city, failed in his challenge despite running a strong campaign. Douglas received 36.25 percent of the votes to Ryan’s 43.92 percent.
