Jamaican Paralympian Alphanso “Ambassador” Cunningham will take his advocacy for inclusion, equality, and greater opportunities for athletes with disabilities to the international stage when he speaks at the Commonwealth Sport Summit 2026 in Antigua and Barbuda next month.

Cunningham, OD, a multiple gold medalist and world-record holder, is scheduled to address the November 2 summit, which will be held alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from November 1 to 4.

His participation brings the experience of one of the Caribbean’s leading para-athletes to a gathering of sporting, government, business, and civil society leaders examining how sport can drive personal development, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for future generations.

Cunningham welcomes opportunity to advance inclusion

The summit will be organized around the theme “Commonwealth Moves,” highlighting sport’s potential to influence lives and societies across the Commonwealth. Discussions will draw on the experiences of elite athletes and explore sport’s contribution to resilience, social impact, and personal growth.

Cunningham, who is also a DIGICEL Ambassador, welcomed the invitation as an opportunity to strengthen the voice of para-athletes and encourage practical initiatives to make sport more inclusive.

“I am very grateful and honoured for another opportunity to influence and contribute to positive ideas and initiatives that will inspire and transform the lives of para-athletes. We need more of these summits so that persons can have a better understanding of the aspirations of para-athletes and commit to using sports to bridge the gap and to re-emphasise the importance of inclusion, respect and equality.”

His message reflects the broader objective of ensuring that athletes with disabilities are not only represented in international sporting discussions but also included in decisions that shape the future of sport.

Paralympic triumph established his credentials

Cunningham’s selection follows a career marked by international success and a sustained commitment to inspiring other para-athletes.

At the London 2012 Paralympic Games, he captured gold in the men’s F52/53 javelin event, adding to his standing as one of Jamaica’s most accomplished para-athletes.

Later that year, he received the Most Outstanding Para Athlete award at the prestigious Commonwealth Sports Awards ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago.

His record of achievement, combined with his experience as an advocate and mentor, has helped establish him as a prominent voice on the advancement of para-sport throughout the region and beyond.

Samuda praises his leadership and humility

Cunningham’s latest appointment has drawn praise from President Christopher Samuda, who highlighted not only his sporting credentials but also his willingness to use his experiences to motivate others.

“The ambassador’s credentials and breadth and depth of his experience are beyond dispute but what is very admirable is his humility in the face of prodigious successes and his ability to inspire, and his generosity in using his experiences in challenging and motivating, generations of para-athletes. A gentleman and scholar, an exemplar and torchbearer, he will deliver value and wealth to the sporting Commonwealth.”

The endorsement underscores the value of Cunningham’s contribution beyond competition, particularly his role in encouraging emerging para-athletes to pursue their ambitions and helping broaden understanding of the challenges they face.

Sport at the center of Commonwealth discussions

The Commonwealth Sport Summit is expected to be one of the principal ancillary events of the Heads of Government Meeting, bringing together influential figures from sport, government, business, and civil society.

Alongside “Commonwealth Moves,” the program will address “Commonwealth Growth” and “Commonwealth Unity,” examining how sport can support development, strengthen connections among member countries, and advance shared objectives.

Cunningham’s appearance will add a strong para-sport perspective to those discussions, with his experience offering an example of how elite competition and advocacy can work together to promote opportunity, respect, and equality across the Commonwealth.
