Cuba reaffirms commitment to bilateral migration agreement with US

In recent discussions held in Washington DC, the Government of Cuba has reiterated its commitment to adhere to the policies outlined in a bilateral agreement regarding irregular migration, signaling a collaborative stance with the United States.

Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío Domínguez led the Cuban delegation, while Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Eric Jacobstein, headed the US contingent.

Firm commitment amidst policy concerns

Emphasizing their unwavering stance, the Cuban delegation underscored their readiness to honor and uphold the established commitments, expressing concern over policies and measures that potentially foster irregular migration—a stance stemming from political decisions made by the US government.

Economic blockade impact and migration dynamics

During the discourse, Cuba emphasized the adverse effects of the US economic blockade, especially the intensified measures implemented since 2019.

These stringent policies have notably impacted the socioeconomic landscape of the Cuban populace, potentially serving as a significant impetus for migration.

Consular concerns and visa processing

In addition to policy discussions, the Cuban delegation highlighted the necessity of reinstating non-immigrant visa processing at the US Embassy in Havana.

This consular facility, if operational, could deter Cuban citizens from seeking visa processing in third-party countries—an aspect deemed crucial for facilitating smoother migration processes.

Call for comprehensive compliance and ongoing dialogue

Amidst the talks, Cuba stressed the importance of comprehensive adherence to bilateral migration agreements, advocating for an inclusive approach rather than selective implementation.

Furthermore, they reaffirmed their readiness to engage in continued dialogues with the United States, signaling a commitment to address migration-related challenges collaboratively.
