Sucic gives Croatia the early advantage

The opening stages were cautious, with neither team immediately finding a clear attacking rhythm.

Croatia created the first major opening in the 17th minute when Vlasic collected the ball outside the penalty area and sent a low shot narrowly wide, striking the outside of the post.

The breakthrough eventually arrived shortly after the half-hour mark.

Sucic attempted his luck from around 30 yards, firing a low effort through a crowded Ghana defense. The shot took advantage of Luckassen’s position in front of goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who was unable to react in time as the ball found the bottom corner.

The goal marked only Sucic’s second international goal and gave Croatia the platform they needed.

Ghana find their rhythm after falling behind

The setback forced Ghana to become more adventurous, and the Black Stars began to test Croatia’s defense.

Antoine Semenyo nearly restored parity before halftime, driving into the box before sending his effort narrowly past the far post.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz adjusted his approach during the interval, introducing Abdul Fatawu to add more attacking threat.

The change immediately injected energy into Ghana’s play.

Fatawu quickly went close with a shot that sailed over the crossbar, while Semenyo almost connected with another Fatawu delivery at the near post but could not quite reach the cross.

Luckassen levels the contest as Ghana push forward

Ghana’s sustained pressure finally produced a reward in the 73rd minute.

A set-piece created confusion inside the Croatian penalty area, allowing Luckassen to calmly finish with his left foot.

The goal survived a lengthy review process before being confirmed after a four-minute delay, sparking celebrations from the Ghana supporters.

For Luckassen, it was a landmark moment, his first international goal. It also continued a family connection at the tournament, as he followed his brother Brian Brobbey, who had scored three times for the Netherlands during the group stage.

Croatia strike back when it matters most

The momentum, however, swung once again almost immediately.

Croatia responded with the experience and control that has made them one of the most reliable tournament teams in recent years.

A brilliant save from Asare denied Mario Pasalic in the 82nd minute, but Croatia kept pressing.

From the resulting corner, Luka Modric delivered the perfect cross, finding Vlasic unmarked inside the box. The midfielder rose above the defense and headed home to restore Croatia’s lead.

The late winner sealed progression and set up a knockout-stage meeting with the second-place finisher from Group K in Toronto.

Ghana exit proudly afterr reaching the knockout round

Although Ghana suffered defeat, their World Cup campaign had already achieved a significant milestone.

The Black Stars entered the match knowing qualification was secured after their victory over Panama and their draw with England in their opening two matches.

This marks Ghana’s third appearance in the World Cup knockout stages, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.

Croatia, meanwhile, briefly occupied the top spot in Group L during the day’s action before England’s victory over Panama confirmed the Three Lions as group winners.

Now through to the next round, Croatia will rely once again on their blend of experience, discipline, and late-match determination as they continue their pursuit of another deep tournament run.
