Colombia secured first place in World Cup Group K after a thrilling 0-0 draw with Portugal on Saturday, a match that produced relentless attacking football, outstanding goalkeeping, and a late VAR decision that left the Colombians frustrated.

Despite the lack of goals, the contest delivered everything expected from a heavyweight encounter. Colombia repeatedly threatened Portugal’s defense, while Portugal created enough danger of their own to keep the match alive until the final whistle.

The result sent Colombia into the last 32 as group winners, where they will face Ghana next Friday. Portugal advanced as runners-up and will now prepare for a high-profile meeting with Croatia, where Cristiano Ronaldo is set to face his former Real Madrid teammate and Croatian legend Luka Modric.

Colombia control the tempo as Rodriguez takes center stage

The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric, with thousands of Colombian supporters creating a constant wall of noise. Watching from the stands were United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, as the two teams produced a match worthy of the occasion.

While Portugal arrived with Ronaldo as their global superstar, Colombia had their own influential figure in James Rodriguez.

The 34-year-old midfielder, making his record 11th World Cup appearance for his country, dictated play with the creativity and vision that made him famous.

Colombia should have taken control early.

Jhon Cordoba missed a golden opportunity when he headed over the bar from close range after being perfectly set up by Bayern Munich attacker Luis Diaz.

Cordoba came close again moments later, escaping a defender before unleashing a powerful shot that forced Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa into a sharp save.

Costa stands tall as Portugal resist the Colombian attack

Rodriguez continued to unlock spaces in Portugal’s defense, producing one of the match’s finest moments when his clever reverse pass sent Jhon Arias through.

The Colombian forward looked destined to score, but Ruben Neves cleared the effort off the line.

Portugal struggled to match Colombia’s attacking rhythm, with Ronaldo unable to influence the contest as expected. His biggest contribution came from a free kick that went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

Vargas soon had his own moment of brilliance, making an excellent save to deny Bruno Fernandes and keep the match level.

Rodriguez nearly added his own name to the scoresheet before halftime, but Costa calmly collected his attempt.

Second half brings more chaos and missed opportunities

The second half resumed at the same breathtaking pace.

Portugal immediately threatened when Joao Felix rose to meet Diogo Dalot’s cross but sent his header high over the goal.

Colombia answered with more pressure, forcing Costa into action again. The goalkeeper punched away Jefferson Lerma’s strike before watching Jhon Arias fire another dangerous effort from distance.

Ronaldo appeared to have a chance to finally break through when he found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat, but his shot went wide and the play was later ruled offside.

The Portuguese captain was spared further disappointment, though his influence remained limited.

Colombia keep creating, Costa keeps saving

Colombia’s attacking energy continued after substitutions.

Richard Rios came close almost immediately after entering the match but failed to convert a promising opportunity.

Costa, meanwhile, was becoming the difference-maker. The Portugal goalkeeper produced another outstanding stop to deny Arias as Colombia’s forwards continued to stretch the defense.

Rodriguez eventually left the field after an impressive individual display, but Portugal coach Roberto Martinez chose to keep Ronaldo on while making changes elsewhere in the lineup.

The decision did not produce the attacking spark Portugal needed.

VAR denies Colombia a dramatic winning goal

The final minutes brought the biggest moment of controversy.

Costa prevented another dangerous Colombian attack by clearing a threatening cross, but the ball fell to Luis Suarez, whose spectacular bicycle kick flew just over the bar.

Then came Colombia’s closest chance.

Davinson Sanchez appeared to have delivered the winning goal when he headed home at the far post, sending Colombian fans into celebration.

But after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, seemingly by the smallest of margins.

Sanchez protested by wagging his finger, while the Colombian supporters responded with disappointment.

Still, the final whistle confirmed Colombia’s achievement.

They finished top of the group, secured a favorable knockout position, and showed they could compete with one of the tournament’s most experienced sides.

Portugal, meanwhile, move forward with questions surrounding their attack but with their World Cup journey still alive.
