Cheyna Matthews to bid farewell to professional soccer after illustrious career

In a significant decision that marks the end of a remarkable career, Reggae Girlz forward Cheyna Matthews has announced her retirement from professional football.

The 29-year-old, known for her contributions to Jamaica's historic FIFA Women’s World Cup journey, will hang up her boots following her final match with the Chicago Red Stars against OL Reign at the SeatGeek Stadium on Sunday, October 15. Her club plans to honor her with a special ceremony before the match.

Matthews, who turns 30 in November, has been an integral part of the Reggae Girlz since 2019, representing Jamaica at two FIFA Women’s World Cups. Her presence on the field and her dedication to the national team have been invaluable to Jamaican women's football.

The Jamaica Football Federation expressed its gratitude for her outstanding contributions to the women's program, thanking Cheyna for her dedication to Jamaica and wishing her all the best in her future endeavors. She will forever be regarded as a Reggae Girl.

Matthews started her professional career in 2016

A native of Georgia and a graduate of Florida State University, Matthews embarked on her professional career in 2016 when she was selected as the seventh overall draft pick by the Washington Spirit. She spent five successful years with the Washington Spirit before joining Louisville FC in 2021, further solidifying her reputation as a top-class player.

In addition to her illustrious football career, Cheyna Matthews is also known for her personal life. She is married to San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jordan Matthews and is a proud mother of three sons.
