Cheddi Jagan International Airport anticipates surge in flights by December

Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) is on track to reach a milestone in aviation traffic, anticipating a jump to 100 international scheduled flights weekly by December. 

This uptick is fueled by increasing partnerships and an uptrend in passenger volume.

Air Navigation Services Director outlines growth

Rickford Samaroo, the Director of Air Navigation Services, outlined the airport’s growth trajectory in a recent interaction with Guyana’s Department of Public Information. 

Samaroo shared that the CJIA is currently managing 85 scheduled incoming flights per week, a figure set to rise with the holiday season.

Expansion of flight networks

The past year has seen the CJIA expand its international connections significantly. New direct flights have been introduced by airlines including Canada Jetlines, British Airways, and Sky Cana. 

Inaugural flights from prominent global carriers like Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines have bolstered this expansion.

Passenger volume and operational highlights

In terms of passenger handling, the CJIA has processed over 545,000 passengers to date, marking a 13 per cent increase from the previous period. 

Eugene F. Correia International’s steady climb

The Eugene F. Correia International Airport is also experiencing growth.

It currently accommodates 45 international flights per week and is projected to increase to 52 by year’s end.

The airport has recorded an average of 139 daily landings and take-offs to date. These include an average of 12 international landings and 20 offshore flights.

The escalation in flight activity is closely tied to Guyana’s burgeoning economy, recognized as one of the fastest-growing globally. 

The nation’s prosperity is mirrored in its flourishing sectors, particularly the dynamic expansion of the tourism industry.
