CARICOM National Security Ministers to Meet in St Kitts to Address Transnational Crime

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) security and law enforcement ministers are set to meet in St Kitts and Nevis later this week for the 28th meeting of the Council of Ministers of National Security and Law Enforcement. The two-day meeting, beginning on Thursday, will focus on formulating and implementing strategies to enhance collaboration and coordination in addressing the challenges posed by transnational crime in the region.

The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, who also holds the position of Minister of National Security, Citizenship, and Immigration. According to a government statement, Prime Minister Drew has made tackling crime on a regional level a key priority, and the upcoming meeting is viewed as a critical step in advancing this objective. The discussions will aim to strengthen regional security efforts and ensure a more unified approach to combating crime.

“As part of CARICOM’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its member states, the council will gather to discuss and develop comprehensive strategies to combat transnational crime, which continues to pose a significant threat to the region,” the statement said.

It said that the discussions during the two-day meeting will focus on improving intelligence sharing, strengthening border security, and advancing legislative frameworks to ensure a unified and robust response to criminal activities that transcend national boundaries.

“Our collective security depends on our ability to work together and share resources, information, and best practices. This meeting is a testament to our commitment to protecting our citizens and ensuring a safe and secure Caribbean,” Drew added.
