CARICOM Heads of Government convene for the 46th Regular Meeting

The 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is set to commence with an official opening in Guyana this Sunday.

The event marks a significant gathering of regional leaders, under the chairmanship of Guyana’s President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who will spearhead the event with a keynote speech.

Distinguished speakers and high-level discussions

The opening ceremony will feature addresses from key figures, including CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, and the outgoing CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica.

The event promises to be a platform for insightful discussions and presentations by these prominent leaders.

Strategic dialogues with international guests

A highlight of the meeting will be the business sessions, where the Heads of Government will engage in strategic discussions with special guests, including Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

These sessions aim to foster dialogue and collaboration on various pressing issues.

Focus on regional integration and challenges

The agenda for the four-day meeting includes crucial discussions on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy and the progress towards the free movement of all Community Nationals by March 31.

This initiative, mandated during the 45th Regular Meeting, underscores CARICOM’s commitment to regional integration and mobility.

Addressing key regional concerns

Leaders will also tackle the Caribbean region’s rising food import bill and seek ways to boost intra-regional trade.

Other vital topics such as climate change, climate financing, regional security, the situation in Haiti, and border issues will be thoroughly explored, reflecting the region’s dedication to resolving shared challenges.

The Meeting will end with a press conference on February 28.
