Canada seals Paris 2024 Olympics berth, inaugural W Gold Cup entry

In a riveting clash inside BMO Field in Toronto on Tuesday, Canada emerged triumphant with a 2-1 result over Jamaica in the second leg of the CONCACAF Olympics Playoff for the Paris 2024.

Drew Spence struck for Jamaica early, only for Cloe Lacrosse to equalize before Jordyn Huitema headed home the winner early in the second half.

The reigning Olympics champions won the two-legged tie 4-1 on aggregate and also qualified directly to the 2024 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.

The Canucks now join the US, France, Brazil, and Colombia to have qualified, with two Asian and European teams, an Oceania team, and two teams from Africa to make up the 12 which will participate in France next year.

For Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz, the loss sees them drop into a Women’s Gold Cup Qualifying Group A which includes Panama and Guatemala.

The three teams will play home and away starting October 25 with the Reggae Girlz facing Panama away.

Canucks extend win streak to 11-straight against Reggae Girlz

Tuesday’s win marked the 11^th consecutive triumph for Canada against Jamaica in 11 matches, underscoring their dominance with 64 goals scored and only two conceded.

Jamaica struck first, finding the back of the net in the 33^rd minute from a free-kick opportunity, awarded after a foul in their attacking area. Midfielder Spence expertly executed the set-piece, directing the ball over a “wall” and into the top left corner of goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan’s net.

Jamaica survived another close call in the 36^th minute when left-sided defender Deneisha Blackwood nearly scored an own goal while attempting to clear a dangerous situation, following a Canadian corner kick. The ball rattled the crossbar.

Canada, undeterred, sought to level the score, with defender Ashley Lawrence unleashing a powerful strike from outside the penalty area in the 38^th minute, but Jamaican goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer managed to tip the ball onto the crossbar and out of danger.

Lacasse, Huitema rally Canada past Jamaica

The breakthrough for Canada arrived in the 39^th minute when forward Chloe Lacasse capitalized on a corner kick, heading the ball into the net to equalize the score at 1-1.

Canada’s second goal of the evening came early in the second half when Huitema headed home. Lawrence, demonstrating her skill, evaded a Jamaica defender to deliver a precise cross, setting up Huitema for the crucial goal.

The Canadian legend and team captain Christine Sinclair came close to adding a third goal for her side in the 60^th minute. However, goalkeeper Spencer denied her the opportunity to extend her impressive international goal tally.

With this significant victory, the reigning gold medalists have earned the privilege to defend their Olympic title at Paris 2024.
