A theft ring targeting Home Depot stores spanning the state has been dismantled by Broward County deputies, with the alleged mastermind now behind bars.

Arrest and charges

Jereome Downing, a 26-year-old resident of Fort Lauderdale, found himself in custody after a thorough investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. 

The arrest, made on Tuesday, was the culmination of diligent efforts by law enforcement agencies. 

Downing, along with accomplices, stands accused of orchestrating a scheme that resulted in significant losses for the retail giant.

Modus Operandi

Reports are that they frequented Home Depot stores in various localities, including West Park and Oakland Park, among others. Utilizing false identities, they rented heavy machinery from these establishments. 

Subsequently, the equipment was swiftly sold via online platforms, leaving a trail of financial loss in their wake.

The repercussions of this operation were substantial. Reports indicate that the theft of 21 pieces of machinery amounted to a staggering loss of $460,000 for Home Depot.

Additional arrests are expected, deputies said

As per online jail records, Downing faces charges of organized scheme to defraud.

He is currently held in the BSO Main Jail, with a St. Lucie County hold complicating his legal predicament.
