Broward Health first in South Florida to implant lifesaving AMDS Hybrid Prosthesis

Broward Health Medical Center has made history as the first hospital in South Florida—and only the second in the state—to implant the AMDS™ Hybrid Prosthesis, a groundbreaking device used in lifesaving cardiac surgery for one of the deadliest heart emergencies.

On April 27, board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Alexander Justicz led the cardiovascular operating team in performing the procedure to treat an acute DeBakey Type I aortic dissection complicated by malperfusion, a condition that can rapidly become fatal if untreated.

“This is a proud moment for Broward Health,” said Jenna Merlucci, vice president of heart and vascular services. “Being among the first hospitals in the country to adopt this advanced technology demonstrates our commitment to leading-edge cardiovascular care and improving outcomes for critically ill patients.”

The AMDS Hybrid Prosthesis, recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under a Humanitarian Device Exemption, is one of the most advanced tools available for treating complex aortic dissections. The device helps restore blood flow to vital organs, reduces the risk of further arterial damage, and significantly improves chances of survival.

“The AMDS device gives us a critical advantage in treating one of the most dangerous forms of aortic dissection,” said Dr. Justicz. “By stabilizing the artery and preventing further tearing, we can save lives and support better long-term recovery.”

The prosthesis combines a stent-supported cuff with a unique design that improves blood flow and reduces complications like distal anastomotic new entry (DANE). Its use at Broward Health underscores the hospital’s leadership in cardiovascular innovation and complex surgical care.
