A tragic incident unfolded early Saturday morning in Pompano Beach as a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy en route to respond to a report of "lewd and lascivious" activity inadvertently struck and killed the individual the call concerned, according to officials.
The pedestrian, identified as 28-year-old Jamil Moreland from Fort Lauderdale, was the unfortunate victim of the collision. Sheriff’s Office detectives have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The collision took place shortly before 5:30 a.m. near the 1500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, as detailed in a media release.
Deputy Wyatt Jennesse, 24, was driving westbound down the road in the left thru lane, headed to address the report of a lewd and lascivious person near North Powerline Road, when the collision occurred with Moreland, who was either lying down or crouched in the road.
Following the incident, Jennesse promptly stopped his vehicle and reported the crash.
Broward Sheriff’s Pompano Beach District deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue swiftly responded to the scene. Paramedics unfortunately pronounced Moreland dead on arrival, while Jennesse escaped unscathed.
Victim the subject of the lewd call
Subsequent investigations confirmed Moreland as the subject of the initial lewd and lascivious report. BSO did not say who initiated the call regarding the “lewd and lascivious” report.
The release emphasized that driver impairment, excessive speed, and mechanical malfunction are not considered contributing factors to the crash at this time.
Further investigation revealed that Moreland was charged with a second-degree felony for delivering cocaine and violation of parole in January 2014 and possession of a controlled substance in July 2014, according to Broward County court records.
He had several other misdemeanors and possession charges between 2015 and 2018, along with a third-degree felony charge for driving without a valid license in 2019 and a 2023 misdemeanor traffic arrest for threatening a public servant.
When contacted for comment, Moreland’s brother declined to provide a statement due to the ongoing investigation.
Jennesse joined the Broward Sheriff’s Office in February 2023, according to records. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit remains actively engaged in investigating the crash.
