Bethell set for new challenge at the top

The biggest talking point surrounding the squad is the expected elevation of the 22-year-old Bethell, who is projected to open the batting alongside Ben Duckett.

According to a report from Cricinfo, the move would make Bethell Duckett's fifth opening partner since 2025 while marking a notable shift from the middle-order role he has recently occupied for England's ODI side.

The promotion could have implications beyond the 50-over format.

Bethell has already demonstrated his credentials as an opener during previous spells with England Under-19s and the England Lions, and a successful run at the top of the order could eventually influence his position in both Test and T20 international cricket. Although he currently bats at No. 3 in England's Test lineup, the latest opportunity reflects growing confidence in his versatility and long-term potential.

Archer returns to lead the attack

England will also welcome back Archer, who is expected to spearhead the bowling unit after missing January's successful ODI tour of Sri Lanka, where he was rested.

The experienced fast bowler's return provides England with additional pace, control, and proven match-winning ability as the team prepares to face one of the world's strongest batting lineups.

His inclusion further strengthens an attack that also features Gus Atkinson, Saqib Mahmood, Josh Tongue, Sam Curran, and veteran leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Blend of experience and emerging talent

Captain Harry Brook will lead a squad that combines established international stars with several promising younger players.

Former captain Jos Buttler and veteran batter Joe Root provide a wealth of experience, while Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Tom Banton, Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, James Coles, and the rest of the squad offer England a variety of batting and bowling options throughout the three-match contest.

England ODI squad: Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler, James Coles, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, and Josh Tongue.

With Bethell preparing for a potentially career-defining opportunity at the top of the order and Archer back to marshal the pace attack, England will hope the Barbadian pair can make a decisive impact when the series against India gets underway later this month.
