Belize Ministry of health issues mandatory recall of anti-allergy syrup over contamination concerns

In a bid to prioritize public safety, the Ministry of Health & Wellness in Belize has issued a mandatory recall of Alergo (cetirizine) Anti-Allergy Syrup, a product manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories (Private) Limited. 

This decisive move follows a concerning alert received from the World Health Organization, suggesting potential contamination of the syrup with diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), two contaminants that could pose substantial health risks to consumers.

A precautionary recall: Safeguarding public health

The Ministry of Health & Wellness has characterized this recall as a precautionary measure aimed at protecting the well-being of the public. 

The potential presence of DEG and EG in the syrup has raised red flags, prompting immediate action to prevent any adverse health effects.

With a commitment to ensuring the safety of consumers, the Ministry of Health is diligently working to swiftly remove Alergo Anti-Allergy Syrup from the market. 

Consumers urged to discontinue use and return product

In light of the recall, the Ministry of Health strongly advises anyone in possession of Alergo Anti-Allergy Syrup to discontinue its use immediately. Taking no chances with public health, they recommend returning the product to the nearest pharmacy or clinic for safe disposal. This urgent call to action underscores the potential risks associated with consuming the contaminated syrup.

Recognizing the importance of tracking any potential adverse effects, the Ministry of Health & Wellness encourages individuals who have taken Alergo Anti-Allergy Syrup and experienced unexplained health issues to contact the Drug Inspectorate Unit at 828-6721 or their nearest health center.
