Belize: Foster parents detained following 4-year-old’s death from multiple trauma

The foster parents of a four-year-old girl have been detained by the Belizean police after a post-mortem examination revealed she died from multiple traumas.

The pathologist’s findings painted a grim picture, indicating that Ayanna  Bennett had suffered severe beatings, ultimately leading to her untimely demise.

Police action: detention and charges

Police have taken both foster parents into custody.

Reports are that authorities have charged them with aggravated assault based on advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Police Commissioner Chester Williams provided insight into the ongoing investigation, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Ayanna’s death.

According to reports, Ayanna Bennett had been placed in foster care and had been living with her new family since September 7 of this year in Spanish Lookout, a Mennonite community situated in the Cayo District of Belize.

Details behind the tragedy

According to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, Ayanna suffered brutal beatings because she was unable or unwilling to identify the color of a truck.

Reports are that the foster parents admitted to using a belt to discipline Ayanna. Investigators are working to ascertain whether the injuries were sustained over a period of time or in the moments leading up to her tragic death.

While the law permits parents to chastise their children within the boundaries of justifiable use of force and harm, it emphasizes that such chastisement must not be excessively severe.

The Police Commissioner noted that in Ayanna’s case, where the alleged chastisement resulted in her death, the foster parents could face legal consequences.
