Barbados announces end to COVID-19 data reporting
Barbados health authorities have announced an important shift in their approach to COVID-19 communication.
Effective immediately, the coronavirus dashboard, which has been a primary source of data on COVID-19 cases, test results, and deaths since 2020, will cease publication.
Initiated by the Ministry of Health and Wellness at the onset of the pandemic, the dashboard provided critical updates during crucial stages, including information on vaccine uptake.
Declining virus impact leads to dashboard discontinuation
Dr. Kenneth George, the Chief Medical Officer, explained that the decision to discontinue the dashboard was influenced by the sustained low transmission rates of COVID-19 and a significant drop in related deaths.
In fact, there have been no COVID-19 related deaths reported in the last three to four months.
The global decline of the virus further supported the decision, making the continual dissemination of these statistics unnecessary.
The final update from the dashboard was published on May 24, 2024, covering data from April 13 to May 10, 2024.

Reflecting on the pandemic, Dr. George emphasized the lasting lessons about respiratory hygiene learned from the COVID-19 experience.
Regular handwashing and other hygiene practices have been underscored as foundational measures in preventing the transmission of respiratory diseases.
This approach aligns with the ongoing commitment to public health safety and preparedness against future health crises.
