A 58-year-old Bahamian man was this week remanded in custody after he appeared in court, accused of having sex with his eight-year-old step-granddaughter three times this year.

The man, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the minor, was charged with three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a dependent child. He appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans, who heard that the man allegedly had sexual intercourse with the underage girl three times between January 1 and June 31 in New Providence, Bahamas.

The accused was not required to enter a plea at that time but was informed his matter will proceed to the Supreme Court via a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI). He was also informed that he has a right to apply for bail through the higher court.

The accused was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until his VBI is potentially served on November 27.
