Austria and Algeria delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the World Cup group stage on Saturday, battling to a breathtaking 3-3 draw that secured knockout-stage places for both teams and eliminated Iran.

The match at Arrowhead Stadium appeared destined to end quietly as both sides recognized that a draw would be enough to advance. Instead, the final minutes produced a stunning burst of late goals that turned a cautious ending into unforgettable chaos.

Austria will now face European champions Spain after reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 1982, while Algeria progress to meet Switzerland after matching their run from the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Both teams finished Group J on four points, behind group winners Argentina, who collected nine points.

Six goals, endless momentum swings in Kansas City

The buildup to the match was filled with discussion about whether either team would attempt to avoid a second-place finish and a possible meeting with Spain, one of the tournament favorites.

Both coaches rejected any suggestion of playing for a specific outcome, and the match itself quickly proved their point.

In humid conditions in the American Midwest, the contest exploded into action after the first hydration break, which was met with boos from the largely Algeria-supporting crowd.

Austria struck first.

In the 28th minute, veteran striker Marko Arnautovic controlled a long pass from David Alaba before calmly finishing past Algeria goalkeeper Oussama Benbot.

The 37-year-old forward showed all his experience, taking Austria’s first shot on target and putting his team ahead.

Algeria fight back before the break

Algeria responded with immediate pressure.

They nearly found an equalizer when Fares Chaibi unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, only to watch the ball crash against the post.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime.

Rafik Belghali produced a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past three Austrian defenders before firing home in the 45th minute.

The goal carried an element of fortune.

Austria defender Phillipp Mwene attempted to guide the ball safely out of play, but it struck the corner flag and bounced back into danger, allowing Belghali to take advantage.

The teams entered the interval level, with everything still undecided.

Sabitzer and Mahrez trade blows again

The opening stages of the second half were calmer, but the intensity quickly returned.

Austria regained the lead in the 55th minute through Marcel Sabitzer.

A flowing team move ended with Konrad Laimer delivering the final pass, and Sabitzer struck cleanly from the edge of the area to make it 2-1.

Algeria answered almost immediately.

Five minutes later, former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez reminded everyone of his quality. After excellent buildup play from Houssem Aouar, Mahrez received a precise cross and powered the ball into the net to restore parity.

The match was once again wide open.

A quiet ending turns into unbelievable drama

As the clock moved toward full time, both teams appeared willing to accept the result.

The risk disappeared from their play. Neither side wanted to make the mistake that could cost them qualification.

But the drama was far from finished.

In the 93rd minute, Mahrez struck again, scoring his second goal of the night and seemingly giving Algeria a famous late victory.

However, Austria refused to surrender.

In the final seconds, substitute Sasa Kalajdzic rose highest and headed home to make it 3-3, sending the Austrian players into wild celebration.

The final whistle confirmed that both teams had achieved their objective.

Knockout dreams continue while Iran exit

The result delivered joy for Austria and Algeria but heartbreak for Iran, who had hoped to advance as one of the best third-place teams.

Austria’s return to the knockout rounds after more than four decades marked a significant achievement, while Algeria continued their resurgence on the global stage.

The next challenges will be even greater.

Austria now prepare for a showdown with Spain, while Algeria face Switzerland.

After a match filled with twists, missed chances, and a frantic finale, both nations can look back on Kansas City as the night they survived one of the tournament’s most unforgettable battles.
