Explosive West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has decided to extend his international career until after the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
The 36-year-old had previously planned to retire following the 2024 edition but changed course after discussions with West Indies white-ball head coach, Daren Sammy.
Russell, known for his powerful hitting, dynamic fielding, and useful medium pace, returned to the West Indies T20 side in 2023 after a two-year hiatus, also at Sammy's urging.
“I’ve talked with Sammy and he said he wants me to keep playing some international cricket,” Russell revealed. “By looking around and seeing the talent in the Caribbean, I think I’m going to push my body and myself to play international cricket for another two years. I definitely want to play in the 2026 World Cup because there’s a lot of talent that needs nurturing.”
Desire to contribute
Russell further emphasized his desire to contribute to the development of young West Indian players, particularly all-rounders, while remaining confident in his own abilities.
“I could have walked away from international cricket, but I want to see the youngsters do well. I’m still hitting the ball where I want, still bowling at a good pace, and I’m fit. I don’t see why I should stop,” Russell added.
