Andre Daley makes history, captures inaugural Caribbean Inclusive Sailing title

Andre Daley has added a remarkable new chapter to Jamaica's sporting history, becoming the nation's first para sailor to compete under the banner of the Jamaica Paralympic Association (JPA) before capping that milestone with victory at the inaugural World Sailing Caribbean Inclusive Sailing Championship in Antigua and Barbuda.

In what was his first competitive sailing experience, Daley defied expectations by claiming the championship title, announcing himself as one of the region's newest para-sport success stories while opening another avenue for Jamaica's growing Paralympic movement.

A stunning debut on the water

Daley partnered with coach Emma Paull to produce a commanding performance over the three-day competition, consistently outperforming a talented field that featured sailors from Chile, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Jamaican duo established themselves as the team to beat from the outset, winning seven of the 10 races in the round-robin series to secure the championship in convincing fashion.

For Daley, the triumph carried special significance because it came during his introduction to competitive sailing.

"My experience at the Antigua Sailing Week was great. Even though it was my first time learning to sail, I came first in my event," Daley said.

"It was a bit challenging at first, but I adapted quickly and was rewarded for my efforts. I hope to improve on my skills, participate in more sailing events in the near future and eventually represent my country, Jamaica, at World Championships and international games."

From Adversity to Achievement

Daley's journey to the top of the podium is one defined by resilience.

A seasoned diver before a diving accident left him with a disability, he embraced a new sporting challenge with the same determination that had characterized his earlier athletic pursuits.

That willingness to adapt paid immediate dividends, as he and Paull controlled the championship from its opening races, displaying composure and consistency that belied Daley's inexperience in the sport.

Their dominant performance transformed what began as a debut appearance into a historic breakthrough for Jamaican para sailing.

JPA hails barrier-breaking achievement

Jamaica Paralympic Association President Christopher Samuda praised Daley's accomplishment as a defining moment for the organization and a powerful example of perseverance.

"Andre is exploding barriers and giving lessons of becoming who you will yourself to be."

Samuda said Daley's success reflects the association's commitment to expanding opportunities for para-athletes across a broader range of sports.

"The Jamaica Paralympic Association is on a drive to deepen the pool of talent across the disciplines of sport. We are investing in talent but more important than the money we give is the indomitable spirit of our para-athletes to overcome."

He added that the determination displayed by Jamaica's para-athletes cannot be measured in financial terms.

"Money can't buy that. You can't purchase or donate that. It's in the heart, belly and guts of our sportsmen and women, and this is what I admire and respect."

Eyes fixed on the global stage

Daley's breakthrough victory is only the beginning of what he hopes will become a successful international sailing career.

With the Caribbean title now secured, the pioneering para sailor has already shifted his focus toward an even greater challenge, the World Sailing Championships in Portugal this October.

Determined to continue building on his remarkable debut, Daley remains committed to refining his skills as he pursues the opportunity to represent Jamaica against the world's best.

His historic triumph in Antigua has not only delivered Jamaica's first major success in Caribbean inclusive sailing but has also demonstrated how resilience, determination, and a willingness to embrace new challenges can transform adversity into achievement.
