American model Gigi Hadid released after arrest in Cayman Islands for possession of marijuana

American model Jelena Noura Hadid, popularly known as Gigi Hadid, along with a friend, decided to proceed with their vacation plans in the Cayman Islands despite a recent run-in with local authorities who apprehended the duo for the possession of marijuana.

The 28-year-old model and her friend who in arrived the Cayman Islands on July 10 were later released.

Reports are that the incident occurred upon Hadid’s arrival via a private plane from the United States.

The model’s luggage was searched by the Customs and Border Control agents, which led to the discovery of a small quantity of cannabis, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

Hadid and friend’s guilty plea: Controlled drug importation charges

They both pleaded guilty on July 12 to charges of importing a controlled drug and a drug utensil and were subject to a fine exceeding $1,200.

However, no convictions were recorded in the matter, according to authorities.

In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Hadid made a post with the caption: “All's well that ends well.”

A spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press that Hadid procured the marijuana legally in New York City, backed by a medical license, and her record remains unblemished.

Despite the legalization of medical marijuana in the Cayman Islands in May 2017, recreational use is still deemed illegal.

According to local regulations, first-time offenders possessing up to 12 grams of marijuana could face imprisonment for up to a year and/or a hefty fine.
