Afro-Guyanese discrimination discussed at international forum

Representing the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly Guyana (IPADA-G), attorney Nigel Hughes delivered a stark message at an international conference, shedding light on the discrimination and marginalization experienced by Afro-Guyanese nationals within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
Contradictory views from government officials
Hughes’ assertion stands in contrast to the sentiments expressed by Guyana’s Industry and Commerce representative, Oneidge Walrond, during the Third Session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.
Walrond had previously pledged her country’s support for a second International Decade for People of African Descent, emphasizing Guyana’s commitment to improving the conditions of its Afro-descendant population.
Challenges faced by Afro-Guyanese
In his address, Hughes highlighted the daily struggles faced by Afro-Guyanese, citing instances of discrimination and systemic bias.
He lamented the failure of government initiatives, such as the incorporation of African descent history into school curricula, despite international calls for action.
Government inaction and alleged hostility
Hughes accused the Guyanese government of disregarding United Nations recommendations, resulting in an exacerbation of identity crises and social injustices among Afro-Guyanese.
He further criticized the government’s alleged efforts to defund IPADA-G and downplay the contributions of people of African descent to Guyana’s development.
International framework for action
The establishment of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent by the United Nations General Assembly in August 2021 underscores global efforts to address issues faced by people of African descent.
The forum serves as a consultative platform and advisory body, aligning with the objectives of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) to combat racism and improve the livelihoods of Afro-descendant communities worldwide.
