Jamaican national pleads guilty in South Dakota to over $180K fraud scheme

A Jamaican man has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota to charges stemming from a years-long sweepstakes fraud that cost a California woman more than $181,000.

Dwayne Anderson, 35, of Hanover, Jamaica, entered his plea Friday to federal wire fraud charges. He was arrested in Jamaica in July 2024 on a U.S. indictment and extradited the following month. He has been held in custody since.

According to court documents, Anderson admitted that between 2010 and 2017, he posed under fake names and repeatedly contacted the victim by phone, email, and text message. He falsely told her she had won millions of dollars in a sweepstakes but needed to pay fees and taxes before collecting her winnings. Trusting his claims, the victim sent him more than $181,000 but never received any payout.

Federal prosecutors said the case highlights the Justice Department’s efforts to crack down on international fraud targeting Americans.

“The Department of Justice is committed to protecting Americans from the threats posed by transnational criminals and will vigorously pursue them, wherever they are located,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “Anderson is the latest example in the Department’s ongoing efforts to combat these kinds of foreign based schemes and hold those involved accountable.”

“Americans are increasingly falling victim to devastating fraud schemes perpetrated by transnational criminals,” said U.S. Attorney Alison Ramsdell for the District of South Dakota. “Whether it happens in a rural community or a metropolitan area, the Department of Justice will ensure these criminals are held to account for their shameless targeting of vulnerable individuals and their hard-earned savings.”

“If you target vulnerable Americans with schemes designed to steal their hard-earned money, you will become our target,” said Inspector in Charge Eric Shen of the USPIS Criminal Investigations Group. “The U.S. Postal Inspection Service knows no boundaries when it comes to protecting our communities. We will find you, we will stop you, and we will hold you accountable.”

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) led the investigation, with assistance from Jamaican authorities and the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs.

Anderson’s sentencing date has not yet been set.

St. Kitts and Nevis mourns passing of former Governor-General Sir Edmund Lawrence

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is mourning the loss of Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence, GCMG, OBE, CSM, JP, former Governor-General and a towering figure in national development, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 93.

Born on February 14, 1932, Sir Edmund served as the Federation’s third Governor-General from 2013 to 2015. A distinguished economist, he returned to St. Kitts in 1970 after earning a degree in Economics from the University of London and went on to transform the nation’s financial landscape.

He was the founder of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank and established key institutions within the National Bank Group of Companies, including the National Bank Trust Company (1972), the National Caribbean Insurance Company (1973), and the St. Kitts and Nevis Mortgage and Investment Company (2001).

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance M. Drew, speaking from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is on official duties, expressed “deep sadness” at the news of Sir Edmund’s passing.

“Sir Edmund dedicated his life to uplifting our people. From his remarkable contributions in finance and development to his steady hand as Head of State, he gave so much of himself to the growth and progress of our beloved Federation,” Dr. Drew said in a social media tribute.

The Prime Minister praised Sir Edmund’s vision, humility, and devotion to country, noting that “his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.” He extended condolences on behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis to Sir Edmund’s family, friends, and all who loved him.

Former Prime Minister and current Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, remembered Sir Edmund as a “true and faithful friend and comrade.”

“We’ve lost a true and faithful friend and comrade in the passing of Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence, former Governor-General of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and Founder and Managing Director of the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank and National Group of Companies,” Dr. Douglas said.

Dr. Douglas, who as Prime Minister recommended Sir Edmund’s appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2013, reflected on his enduring contributions:

“May his journey to the Celestial Land of our Ancestors be peaceful… accompanied with sweet music and angelic voices, singing praises of his great works and accomplishments, as a servant leader to his family, husband of Lady Hulda Lawrence, their six children, citizens of this nation, the region and the world. Welcome home, Sir Ed, thou true and faithful servant. You’re most deserving of eternal rest.”

Sir Edmund was sworn in as Governor-General on January 1, 2013, succeeding Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, and served until 2015. Beyond his time as Head of State, he is remembered as the pioneering force behind the establishment of financial institutions that empowered the Federation and strengthened its economy.

A devoted family man, Sir Edmund was the father of six children. His vision, leadership, and lifelong dedication to national development have left an indelible mark on St. Kitts and Nevis.

US authorities arrest Guyanese murder suspect in 2015 killing

The Guyana government on Monday confirmed that the main suspect wanted in connection with the 2015 murder of Noel “Nephi” Luther has been arrested in the United States.

In a statement, the government said Kanand Ojha was detained by members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, which includes US Marshals, Homeland Security, and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

“The arrest of Ojha is as a result of continuous collaboration and cooperation between the Government of Guyana through the Guyana Police Force, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Attorney General’s Chambers and authorities in the United States of America under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters platform,” the statement said.

The government noted that cooperation between Guyana and US law enforcement has strengthened over the years, leading to joint criminal investigations and the arrest and extradition of fugitives in both jurisdictions. “This relationship will intensify in the future,” it added.

Authorities in Guyana had issued a wanted bulletin for Ojha in July 2019, four years after Luther, a sex worker, was fatally shot on a street in Georgetown.

“It is alleged that Luther was shot once to his chest during a confrontation with Ojha and his friend Ron ‘Andel’ Forde,” the statement said.

Forde was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2017 after pleading guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter for Luther’s killing.

Bahamas slashes VAT on medicines and essential items

Bahamians are now paying less for key household and health-related items after the government officially reduced value-added tax (VAT) from 10 percent to 5 percent on a range of essentials.

Prime Minister Philip Davis announced that the cut, effective September 1, applies to medicines, medical supplies, feminine hygiene products, and both baby and adult diapers.

“Medicines will now cost less at the pharmacy. Parents are now paying less for baby supplies. Women are now paying less for feminine care products. Families caring for elderly loved ones are now paying less for adult diapers,” Davis said in a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

He explained that the relief measure is part of the administration’s efforts to ease financial pressure on households while maintaining strong fiscal discipline. “Reducing VAT to 5 per cent on these essential items is about easing the pressure on households who need it most. This relief is possible because the economy is stronger and government finances are on a sounder footing,” Davis said.

According to the Prime Minister, stronger revenues and declining debt have given the government room to make living costs more affordable. He credited the country’s progress to strategic policy decisions aimed at steering the nation out of economic crisis.

“But our goal has never been recovery alone,” Davis added. “Our mission is to build a bigger, more inclusive economy where economic gains are broadly shared. That is why we are expanding opportunities island by island, creating more jobs, supporting entrepreneurs, investing in roads, docks, and airports, modernizing our electricity grid, and preparing Bahamians with education, training, and upskilling so they can succeed in today’s economy.”

Corporal Garfield Williams of St Mary has found a way to balance his demanding career in law enforcement with his determination to build long-term stability for his four children and their mother. His efforts recently received a boost through the JN Financial Group’s ONE JN Passport app.

The digital platform enabled Corporal Williams, a JN member since 2013, to quickly access an unsecured loan from JN Bank. The funds will be invested in two family-managed business ventures, which he said are designed to fill gaps in his community and create opportunities for generational wealth.

“It [ONE JN Passport] was very instrumental and this move I’m making now is something to really give me a safe footing to maintain my family. This money will carry me a far way and with the amount that I took, I’m able to move forward with plans to put up a permanent structure to do what I’m doing,” Williams said.

He added that although there were minor delays on his part, the process was completed in less than five days.

Introduced to the app at JN Bank in Highgate, St Mary, Williams described the service as highly convenient, especially for someone with limited time to visit a branch. He credited the platform’s speed and ease of use with helping him put plans in motion without the usual paperwork or wait times.

“I have two children going into high school and when they complete that and are to move on to college, I won’t have to feel around for some money. I would have laid the foundation and put away enough to get them started,” he explained.

The police corporal also praised the professionalism of JN employees, noting that their support, along with the bank’s competitive offerings, encouraged him to proceed.

“To be honest I had another option but looking at that option was still not safe and JN is really on top of the game right now. To me JN is more like family. You’re not going into a bank to get a loan, it’s like you’re going to your own family to tell them that this is what you want to do, and they are just willing to assist you all the way through,” he said.

Impressed with his experience, Williams has since been recommending the bank to colleagues. “I’m very comfortable with [my loan terms] and right now, there are other officers that I hear talking about loans and I’ve said [to them], listen, don’t go anywhere else. Find JN first, sit down, talk with them and have a business plan. Whatever you want your money to do, go and look at JN,” he shared.

The ONE JN Passport forms part of the JN Group’s wider push to promote financial inclusion. The app allows customers, including those living overseas, to digitally submit their information once to access multiple services across the group, such as unsecured loans, savings accounts, credit cards, and the JN Bank Partna Plan. In the future, users will be able to access the full suite of JN services through the platform.

The app also enables customers to update their Know Your Customer (KYC) documents at any time, helping to improve security and avoid delays in transactions. It is available for download on both Google Play and the App Store.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced new policy guidance aimed at strengthening screening and vetting processes to combat immigration fraud, including false claims to U.S. citizenship.

“U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is restoring robust screening and vetting processes to detect aliens seeking to defraud or abuse the immigration system, including aliens who make false claims to U.S. citizenship,” the agency said in a statement. “We also are actively increasing public awareness among aliens and the public about the consequences of committing immigration fraud. Aliens who use false information or deceitful practices to unfairly obtain immigration advantages will face serious consequences.”

The agency said it has updated the USCIS Policy Manual, Volume 8, Part K, Chapter 2, to clarify how the 2019 Board of Immigration Appeals decision in Matter of Zhang applies to cases involving false claims of U.S. citizenship. The new guidance took effect immediately and applies to all requests pending or filed on or after the publication date.

According to USCIS, the clarified policy specifies that the decision in Matter of Zhang supersedes all prior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy that provided a defense to inadmissibility for false claims to U.S. citizenship under section 212(a)(6)(C)(ii) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). It also explains how the agency considers age, knowledge, and mental capacity in determining whether an individual had the subjective intent to gain an immigration or other legal benefit through a false claim.

The agency noted that the updated guidance contained in the Policy Manual is controlling and overrides any previous instructions on the matter.

USCIS to modernize fee payments with electronic funds

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has implemented a new way to pay fees using electronic debit from a U.S. bank account.

Effective immediately, individuals can make transactions directly to USCIS by completing and signing Form G-1650, Authorization for ACH Transactions, and filing it with their applications, petitions, or requests.

The move aligns with Executive Order 14247, Modernizing Payments to and from America’s Bank Account, and is aimed at reducing the time and manpower required to process checks and money orders, as well as reducing the risks of fraud, lost payments, and theft.

“We have a responsibility to the American people to operate as efficiently and securely as possible,” said USCIS Spokesman Matthew J. Tragesser. “Over 90% of our payments come from checks and money orders, causing processing delays and increasing the risk of fraud and lost payments. America deserves better, and we intend to deliver.”

This new ACH debit payment option is in addition to the existing option of paying by credit card using Form G-1450, giving individuals multiple options to pay required fees.

USCIS will continue to accept paper check and money order payments in addition to credit and debit payments until Oct. 28, 2025. After Oct. 28, USCIS will accept only ACH debit transactions using Form G-1650 or credit card payments using Form G-1450.

USCIS has also issued updated guidance in the Policy Manual (PDF, 495.95 KB) to include ACH debit transactions using Form G-1650 as an acceptable form of payment.

Applicants and petitioners should ensure their accounts have sufficient funds to cover all filing fees. USCIS may reject any application, petition, or request if the transaction is denied. If you do not have a U.S. bank account you cannot use Form G-1650, but you may submit Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions, and use prepaid credit cards to pay filing fees.

Jamaican-American Rapper Busta Rhymes honored with Visionary Award at VMAs

Jamaican-American hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes cemented his place as a pioneer in the genre on Sunday, September 7, when he became the first recipient of the Rock the Bells Visionary Award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The award, presented by fellow hip-hop trailblazer LL Cool J, recognized the 53-year-old rapper’s groundbreaking music career, cultural impact, and creative innovation. “Next time you take 35 years to get me one of these, you’re gonna let me speak as long as I like!” Busta joked while accepting the golden Moonperson, before crediting LL with inspiring him to write his first rhyme.

Born Trevor George Smith Jr. in Brooklyn to Jamaican immigrants, Busta delivered a fiery performance at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, before accepting the honor. Dressed in red leather and backed by longtime hype man Spliff Star, he powered through a medley of hits, including Pass the Courvoisier Part II, Touch It (Remix), Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See, and Scenario, the 1992 A Tribe Called Quest track that first showcased his distinctive style.

He was joined on stage by Joyner Lucas, Papoose, and rising star GloRilla, bridging generations of hip-hop and underscoring his enduring influence.

The Rock the Bells Visionary Award celebrates artists whose creativity reshapes culture, something Busta has done for more than three decades. From kaleidoscopic music videos to patois-infused rhymes and reggae-inspired beats, his Jamaican heritage has remained central to his artistry.

Busta also used the moment to honor Ananda Lewis, the beloved MTV VJ who died earlier this year after battling stage 4 breast cancer. “She loved us, loved the culture, and she lifted us up,” he said.

The recognition comes on the heels of another career milestone: in August, Busta Rhymes was immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with the unveiling of star number 2,818.

 

Miramar Cultural Center announces packed Fall lineup through 2026

The Miramar Cultural Center has unveiled a slate of concerts and performances stretching from October 2025 through June 2026, with a diverse mix of R&B, jazz, gospel, reggae, dancehall, country, and holiday-themed shows on the schedule.

The season opens Friday, October 10, with After 7 and Regina Belle, hosted by Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne. The Grammy-winning Belle joins the multi-award-winning R&B group for a night of smooth vocals and timeless hits, including After 7’s “Ready or Not” and Belle’s “Baby Come to Me.” Tickets for the show start at $75.

CTO Youth Congress returns at SOTIC 2025 in Barbados

The Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Regional Tourism Youth Congress is set to return as one of the marquee events of this year’s State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC), scheduled for October in Barbados.

The event, staged in partnership with the Barbados Ministry of Tourism and International Transport and Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., brings together students aged 14 to 17 from across the region, each serving as a “Junior Minister/Commissioner of Tourism.”

This year, participants from 16 CTO member countries and territories will share their research and ideas on the future of Caribbean tourism during the Youth Congress on October 2. The exchanges are designed to sharpen critical thinking and communication skills while giving industry delegates insight into the vision of the next generation.

Sharon Banfield-Bovell, CTO’s Director of Resource Mobilization and Development, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “This initiative transcends a simple competition,” she said. “It represents a fundamental pathway to developing future tourism advocates and innovators who will help define the trajectory of the Caribbean tourism sector.”

US Coast Guard imposes conditions on vessels arriving from Suriname

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) announced on September 3 that it will impose conditions of entry on vessels arriving from the Republic of Suriname, citing concerns over ineffective antiterrorism measures at Surinamese ports. The policy will take effect on September 17, 2025.

The announcement, issued through Port Security Advisory PSA 4-25, applies to any vessel entering U.S. waters after visiting ports in Suriname. The move is part of a broader effort to protect U.S. ports from vessels arriving from foreign locations that the Coast Guard has found to have inadequate antiterrorism security.

With Suriname added, the list of countries with ports considered to have ineffective antiterrorism measures now includes Cambodia, Cameroon, Comoros, Cuba, North Korea, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Madagascar, Micronesia, Nauru, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Sudan, Syria, Timor-Leste, Venezuela, and Yemen.

According to USCG, vessels visiting U.S. ports after calling at these locations must comply with specific security requirements:

  • Implement measures per the vessel’s security plan equivalent to Security Level 2, as defined in the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, while in high-risk ports such as Suriname or the Federated States of Micronesia. Security Level 2 refers to heightened protective measures maintained due to an increased risk of a security incident.

  • Ensure all access points to the vessel are guarded, with guards maintaining total visibility of both landside and waterside areas. Guards may be crew members or outside security forces approved by the vessel’s Master and Company Security Officer.

  • Attempt to execute a Declaration of Security while in the high-risk port.

  • Log all security actions in the vessel’s security records.

  • Report actions taken to the cognizant Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP) before arrival in U.S. waters.

Additionally, based on the findings of Coast Guard boarding or inspections, vessels may be required to deploy armed private security guards at each access point in U.S. ports, with guard numbers and positions approved by the COTP prior to arrival.

The Coast Guard said these measures are essential to maintaining the safety of U.S. ports and maritime operations.

AFC accepts Guyana election results, congratulates President Ali

The Alliance for Change (AFC) has officially accepted the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) declaration that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) won the 2025 General and Regional Elections, extending congratulations to newly inaugurated President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

“…now that the Commission has officially announced that the People’s Progressive Party Civic has won these elections, we accept the declaration and extend congratulations to Dr. Irfaan Ali,” the party said in a brief Sunday statement.

The AFC did not secure any seats in the National Assembly, receiving a total of 3,610 votes across all 10 districts.

The party also noted that its interactions with GECOM during the election period “was not without its challenges,” and expressed hope that observations made by election missions would lead to meaningful changes by both GECOM and the PPP/C government in the future.

The AFC thanked the people of Guyana for exercising their right to vote peacefully and expressed gratitude to its supporters. “We remain committed to good governance in Guyana and will continue to advocate for justice, a fair share, equality and equity for all citizens,” the statement concluded.

Robert King has been elected as the new leader of the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), pledging to serve as an agent for change and hold the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) government accountable. King succeeds Jarion Richardson following a leadership vote at the party’s annual conference on Saturday night.

King, Shadow Minister of National Security, the Cabinet Office, and Digital Innovation, won over Ben Smith, Shadow Minister of Education and Sport. Party members also elected Scott Pearman, Shadow Minister of Justice, as deputy leader, defeating Michael Fahy, Shadow Minister of Home Affairs.

Speaking after his victory at the Vasco da Gama Club, King highlighted the immediate focus for his leadership. “First and foremost, we have to get our candidates ready for the next election,” he said, noting the party would operate as “a vocal Opposition and government-in-waiting” as legislators return to the House of Assembly on Friday.

King emphasized that the leadership contest was closely contested. “It could have gone either way, but voters chose me because they believe I will best advocate for them and get our party ready for the next election,” he said, adding that the spirited race demonstrated “democracy in action” with high member turnout.

The new OBA leader pledged a “formidable” Opposition team and a communication strategy capable of countering what he described as the PLP’s “well-oiled propaganda machine.” He stressed the importance of speaking out in the House when the administration acts inappropriately or spreads misinformation.

Acknowledging the challenges of the role, King said: “It’s been exhausting…the amount of work involved, being out in the community, connecting with constituents, addressing their concerns, and running a leadership election. It’s extremely exhausting, but rewarding.”

King also announced plans for ongoing community engagement through town hall meetings. “To truly make a difference and have persons in the community connect with us, we need permanent connections to the community, not just in the election cycle,” he said.

He confirmed his commitment to the position, stating he would occupy the Opposition leader’s office “Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 — this is my full-time position.”

CARICOM welcomes draft UN Resolution for enhanced security assistance in Haiti

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) said it “notes with great interest and anticipation” the recent tabling of a draft United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at providing further security assistance to Haiti, following a request by the Haitian government and recommendations from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“This initiative comes at a critical moment in the continuing degeneration of the insecurity and humanitarian situation in Haiti with its increasing cortège of killings, kidnappings, gender-based violence, loss of territory and the displacement of huge numbers of people at the hands of the armed gangs,” the 15-member regional group said in a statement.

The draft resolution, moved by the United States and Panama, acknowledges the contribution of the Kenya-led Multilateral Security Support Mission (MSS) to peace and stability in Haiti, highlighting Kenya’s leadership and the support of other member states that have provided personnel, as well as donor contributions.

According to CARICOM, the resolution endorses Guterres’ recommendations, approved by the Haitian government, for deploying an increased security force and establishing a UN Support Office in Haiti to provide logistical and operational assistance. The MSS would transition into a “Gang Suppression Force (GSF)” with a ceiling of 5,500 personnel and a robust mandate. Funding for the GSF will come from voluntary sources, while the Support Office will be funded through UN member state assessments.

The draft also references the recent Organization of American States (OAS) Roadmap for Stability and Peace in Haiti, supporting Haitian-led efforts and potentially providing logistical support for the GSF.

“Further to its continued international advocacy in support of Haiti, a CARICOM member state, the Caribbean Community calls on the member states of the UN Security Council, in particular the permanent members, to take into account the dire and precarious straits in which the people and country of Haiti have found themselves,” CARICOM said.

“The people of Haiti have had to suffer for far too long. Adoption of this draft resolution will bring a glimmer of hope and the promise of relief to a people who, as the UN Secretary-General observed at the recent Council consultations on Haiti, ‘are in a perfect storm of suffering,’” the statement added.

Last month, United States Deputy Chief of Mission Kimberly J. Penland told the OAS that Washington is drafting a resolution to “properly resource” Haiti’s fight against gang territorial control. She also emphasized robust regional participation in providing strategic leadership of the force, praising Kenya for its “dedication, leadership and support” over the past year, noting the risks taken by Kenyan personnel to prevent a collapse of the Haitian state.

The UN has reported that less than 10 per cent of the US$908 million required for Haiti has been received, describing the effort as “shamefully overlooked and woefully underfunded,” while armed groups continue to block humanitarian access and attack aid workers.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has confirmed that the final count for the September 3, 2025, General Election is now complete, with the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) re-elected and securing majority votes in all three by-elections.

The EOJ dismissed social media claims of irregularities, including reports of missing or uncounted ballot boxes and inaccurate spoiled ballot figures.

“The EOJ would like to remind the public that the preliminary counting of ballots took place in the presence of indoor agents representing at least two candidates/political parties, and in some cases in the presence of election observers. Ballot boxes were accompanied by the indoor agents and escorted by the police to the counting centres,” the office said.

The office confirmed that “all 7,294 general election ballot boxes and all 109 local government by-election ballot boxes have been accounted for, and ballots were counted at the final count at the counting centres in the presence of candidates and/or their representatives.”

Candidates wishing to lodge complaints or objections are asked to use the legal channels available. The EOJ also urged the public to rely on official communication channels and avoid spreading misinformation.

The September election results saw the JLP re-elected with 35 seats, while the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) won 28 seats.

Man critically injured in officer-involved shooting in Liberty City

Authorities are investigating after a man was reportedly shot in the head during an officer-involved shooting in Liberty City in Miami on Monday morning.

The incident occurred just before 7 a.m. in the area of Northwest 15th Avenue and 64th Street. Police said they responded after receiving a ShotSpotter alert, followed by a 911 call reporting a man dressed in black firing gunshots in the neighborhood.

Ring camera footage shows the suspect walking into frame, firing a shot in the air and another toward an apartment building. Several parked police cruisers were visible, and it appears one officer discharged their weapon, striking the man before he could leave the frame.

City of Miami Police Department Chief Mannuel Morales said the department’s prior directed patrols contributed to the rapid response. “This is one of the areas where we have one of our directed patrols, meaning there’s officers here, so there were several officers already in the area prior to the actual call being dispatched,” Morales said.

Miami Fire Rescue confirmed the man, believed to be in his 30s, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. Police recovered a firearm at the scene.

Morales urged anyone with information, including additional video evidence, to come forward. “I would urge anyone from the public that might have information or additional evidence or a ring video to please come forward,” he said. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, with possible rewards of up to $5,000.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation, following standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. No further details have been released.

Fort Lauderdale residents may see temporary water color change

Fort Lauderdale city officials have warned residents that their tap water may change color beginning Monday, September 8, due to ongoing work at the new Prospect Lake Clean Water Center.

The city said crews will be flushing raw water piping at the Prospect Wellfield to remove sand, grit, and other debris—a critical step to ensure high-quality water once the facility is fully operational in fall 2026.

During the process, the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant will not have access to certain wells. “Some wells with naturally higher organic content will need to be used, which may cause your water to appear slightly different than usual,” officials said.

Despite the color change, the city emphasized that the water remains safe to drink and meets all primary drinking water standards. The change is temporary and is expected to resolve once the new plant comes online.

Officials described the work as part of a broader infrastructure upgrade aimed at delivering the highest-quality water to homes and businesses throughout Fort Lauderdale and surrounding municipalities.

Fort Lauderdale is home to thousands of Caribbean-Americans who may be affected.

Thirty-five years of its hallmark staunch commitment to advancing education will be celebrated by the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations (USA) Inc. (UJAA), with an awards luncheon on Sunday, September 14, 2025, in New York.

Slated for the Greentree Country Club in New Rochelle, the much-anticipated UJAA  35th anniversary event will also honor exceptional leaders and organizations in Jamaica and the diaspora, whose work reflects the UJAA spirit of dedicated service to education.

“This milestone is not just about looking back—it’s about doubling down on our promise to support education for generations to come,” said Donovan Wilson, President of UJAA. “Our honorees embody the spirit of service, excellence, and community that has fueled UJAA for 35 years.”

This signature event occurs every five years and is the 7th quinquennial celebration, which the Jamaican umbrella alumni group uses to recognize diaspora- and Jamaica-based individuals and organizations aligned with the UJAA  vision and mission.

The alumni coalition’s highest honor, its Lifetime Achievement Award, goes to the Union’s immediate past president, Samuel Lesleyann. Through his work with Zouk Collective, Jean Louis played a vital role in bringing joy, artistry, and heritage to Miami Carnival each year, helping to celebrate and elevate Caribbean traditions within South Florida’s cultural landscape.

The committee extended condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and legacy, noting: “His spirit will forever live on.”

International recording artist Mr. Vegas has released his latest studio project, Ghetto Reggae, now available on all major streaming platforms.

The 14-track album, which dropped on August 29 under his MV Music imprint, highlights both the artist’s versatility and his expansive vision. While largely a solo effort, Ghetto Reggae features appearances from Daddy U-Roy on Call Tyrone, Demelo on My Enemies, and Greentone on One Praise.

True to its name, the record blends roots reggae with a wide range of sounds, including dancehall, afrobeat, rhythm and blues, and even soca influences—reflecting the broad scope of Mr. Vegas’s artistry.
