Jamaica and the diaspora is mourning the loss of one of its most respected business leaders and public servants. Don Wehby, former Group CEO of GraceKennedy Limited and a former Government Senator, passed away Saturday evening at the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University Hospital of the West Indies. He was 62.
Wehby, who had taken a medical leave from GraceKennedy in October 2024 before retiring officially in February, died following a prolonged illness. A priest administered the last rites shortly after 6 p.m., with his family by his side.
His death has sparked a wave of tributes from across Jamaica’s political, corporate, and athletic circles, underscoring the breadth of his influence and the respect he commanded.
A legacy of integrity and service
Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, reflected on Wehby’s character and contributions: “Whether it was an issue in the Senate or a matter related to the Diaspora, or even guidance on wider matters related to the intersection between government and the private sector, you could always count on Don for support and well thought out perspectives,” she said. “He truly lived his belief in country over all else.”
Senate President Tom Tavares Finson echoed the sentiment, noting, “Don’s contribution to debates in the Senate were always impactful, sober and incisive. Above all, he was a decent human being who operated with integrity, compassion and a sincere commitment to the advancement of Jamaica.”
Wehby’s passing, he added, leaves “a tremendous sense of loss.”
His loss also resonated in the diaspora. Jamaican-American business lawyer Marlon Hill also paid tribute, writing on Instagram: “My deepest condolences to the extended @gracekennedygrp @gracefoodsusa family on the loss of our business mentor friend, and patriot, 🇯🇲Hon Don Wehby, O.J. I truly cherished your mentorship, inspiration and love over the years. From one Georgian @stgc_official to another, you will never ever walk good alone.”
Corporate giant and nationalist
At the helm of GraceKennedy for over a decade, Wehby was widely credited with modernizing and expanding the iconic Jamaican conglomerate. GraceKennedy, in a statement, described him as “a remarkable leader who embodied selfless service, unwavering integrity, and a deep love for his family, GraceKennedy, and his beloved homeland, Jamaica.”
The company added: “His visionary leadership and dedication to nation-building have left an enduring mark on our company and country.”
Prime Minister Andrew Holness also paid tribute, calling Wehby “a visionary leader” and “deeply principled.”
Athletic world pays tribute
Track and field icon and Grace Foods Brand Ambassador Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce described Wehby as “transformational,” saying, “To know Don was to witness grace and grit in perfect balance. He was the kind of leader who made you feel seen, valued, and capable of more.”
Their relationship began as a corporate partnership, but evolved into a deeper connection rooted in shared values. “He poured everything he was—his intellect, his passion, his integrity—into uplifting this country and everyone around him,” she said.
Under his leadership, GraceKennedy deepened its investment in sports, becoming a key supporter of Jamaican athletics through sponsorships, youth programs, and long-standing partnerships with events like the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships.
Survived by loved ones
Don Wehby is survived by his wife Hilary, his children Nicholas, Stephanie, and Abigail, and a wide circle of colleagues, friends, and admirers. As Jamaica continues to reflect on his passing, many agree: his legacy is firmly etched into the nation’s story.
“Walk good, my friend,” Fraser-Pryce said. “You ran your race with distinction.”
