Who is Tanya Chutkan – the Jamaican judge presiding over the Donald Trump case?

Tanya Chutkan was born in Kingston, Jamaica on July 5th, 1962. Her father, Winston Chutkan, was one of Jamaica’s first orthopedic surgeons. Her mother, Noelle Hill, daughter of Frank Hill who helped found one of Jamaica’s main political parties — the People’s National Party (PNP) — taught at the College of Arts, Science and Technology (now known as UTECH) and represented Jamaica in squash, tennis, dance, and bridge.

Chutkan migrated to the US and received her BA in Economics from the George Washington University, in Washington DC. She went on to earn a JD (Doctor of Law) from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. 

What did Judge Chutkan do before she was a judge?

After law school, Chutkan worked in private practice for three years and then joined the District of Columbia Public Defender Service (PDS) where she operated as a trial attorney and supervisor. While at PDS, Chutkan tried over 30 cases, including many serious felony matters. She left after eleven years to join Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, where she specialized in litigation and white-collar criminal defense. She became a partner in 2007. During her 12 years at the firm, her clients included antitrust class action plaintiffs, as well as individual and corporate defendants involved in complex state and federal litigation.

How did President Obama change Judge Chutkan’s career path?

In 2014, Judge Chutkan was appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia by former President Barack Obama. Her nomination was confirmed through a unanimous 95-0 vote. Chutkan became the third-ever African-American woman to serve on the district court.

A savant in many fields, Judge Tanya Chutkan’s brother, Noelle Hill Chutkan, is a multi-disciplinary student who excelled at dance, squash, bridge, and law. Perhaps the inspiration for Judge Tanya Chutkan, Noelle Hill-Chutkan attended law school and taught at the College of Arts, Science and Technology in Jamaica, now known as UTECH. At the prime of her career, Noelle Hill-Chutkan was one of the leading dancers for the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica.
