South Florida authorities to crackdown on illegal customization of license plates

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Illegal customization of license plates are drawing the attention of Florida law enforcement, prompting a statewide crackdown by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The issue is particularly prevalent in South Florida, where nearly 80% of the violations are occurring.

“We are trying to stop the current trend that we are seeing,” said Lt. Alex Camacho of the FHP.

Florida law strictly prohibits altering state-issued license plates in any form, including changing colors, airbrushing designs, or applying vinyl wraps. The reflective coating on these plates is crucial for visibility and safety, as emphasized by Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Camacho.

“If you put this tag on your car, we are going to seize that tag. Your vehicle will be towed, and you will receive an infraction,” Camacho warned. “It’s bigger than people thinking it’s not a big deal.”

The data supports his concerns. Citations for illegal license plate alterations have risen by more than 98%. Of the 893 tickets issued statewide this year, 702 were issued in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

Multiple business in the South Florida area advertise on social media platforms about their work in customization plates adding another layer to the growing problem in the area.

Altering a license plate is illegal in all states, including Florida. However, Florida offers over 100 different specialty license plates supporting various organizations. The funds raised from the sale of these specialty plates are directed entirely to the respective organizations, helping to support their causes.
