Mary Brickell, a trailblazing landowner and one of the original architects of modern Miami, has been named to the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame, the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women (CFW) announced. She is one of only three women across the state selected for induction this year.
The nomination, submitted by CFW leadership, reflects the commission’s commitment to honoring women whose legacies have long been underrecognized in South Florida history.
“Mary Brickell’s leadership, compassion, and vision helped lay the foundations of Miami’s civic and economic life—at a time when women could not vote, yet still shaped the direction of history,” said Dr. Rose Martin, director of the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women. “Her recognition at the state level affirms the lasting impact of her contributions.”
Born in England in 1836, Brickell emigrated to the United States and settled in South Florida in the 1870s with her husband, William. The couple acquired large portions of land on the south side of the Miami River, establishing a trading post and helping lay out the early grid of the city. After William’s death in 1908, Mary Brickell independently managed the family’s real estate ventures—negotiating land deals and working with key developers, including Henry Flagler, to support Miami’s expansion.
The Brickell neighborhood—now a global financial hub—and Mary Brickell Village, a popular shopping and dining destination, both bear her family’s name. While historically credited to the couple, modern efforts by historians and advocates have focused on restoring recognition to Mary’s individual influence in shaping the city’s identity.
Brickell’s official induction will take place in September 2025 at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee, where a commemorative plaque in her honor will be installed in the Capitol Rotunda.
The Florida Women’s Hall of Fame was created by the state legislature in 1982 to recognize women who have made lasting contributions to Florida’s communities and public life. For more details and a full list of inductees, visit flwomenshalloffame.org.
