The European Union has announced the deployment of an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to monitor Guyana’s upcoming General and Regional Elections, scheduled for September 1, 2025.
The decision follows a formal invitation from the Government of Guyana and was approved by the High Representative and Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas.
Leading the mission will be Mr. Robert Biedroń, Member of the European Parliament, who has been appointed Chief Observer. In his statement, Mr. Biedroń said, “I am very honoured to lead the European Union Election Observation Mission to Guyana. These General & Regional Elections in September will be an important moment for Guyana to demonstrate its continued commitment to credible and peaceful democratic processes. At this pivotal time of economic transformation, upholding democratic principles and human rights is especially important and Guyana has the opportunity to continue setting a strong example.”
The EU EOM aims to provide a comprehensive, independent, and impartial assessment of the entire electoral process, measured against international and regional democratic standards.
The mission will include a Core Team of nine election experts arriving on August 23, 2025, and 14 long-term observers deployed nationwide starting in early August. As election day approaches, an additional 20 short-term observers, along with locally recruited observers from the accredited diplomatic community, will join the mission to ensure thorough coverage.
Following the elections, the EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement and hold a press conference in Georgetown. A detailed final report, featuring recommendations to enhance future elections, will be published and shared with relevant stakeholders after the electoral process concludes.
