Tensions boiled over into violence on Thursday in Tuschen, Guyana, after the body of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge was discovered in the swimming pool of the Double Day Hotel. Hours after the grim find, protestors set both the hotel and the residence of the hotel’s owner ablaze, sparking a wave of outrage and chaos in the community.
Adrianna had visited the hotel on Wednesday afternoon with her grandmother, Carol Xavier, and other family members. She vanished shortly after arriving, prompting a frantic search by both relatives and police. The pool—where her body was ultimately found—was reportedly among the areas initially inspected.
But by Thursday morning, the child’s lifeless body surfaced in that same pool, bearing visible signs of violence on her face and body. The shocking discovery has fueled widespread suspicion of foul play.
In the hours that followed, flames engulfed the entire hotel as hundreds of residents gathered, demanding answers and justice for the young girl. Firefighters and heavily armed police struggled to contain the fires and the unrest, with emotions running high and crowds refusing to disperse.
Later that day, anger turned toward the hotel owner’s private residence—located three streets away—which was also set on fire by protestors. The community accused the hotel’s management and local authorities of negligence and potential cover-up, fueled by reports of visible bruises and injuries on Adrianna’s body.
The tragic death and ensuing fires have shaken Guyana, drawing national attention. President Dr. Irfaan Ali has since ordered the Commissioner of Police to launch a full investigation into the matter and bring in a specialized investigative team.
“We must get to the truth of everything that transpired and no resource or effort will be spared in determining this,” President Ali declared. “Whatever specialized resources are required… will be provided.”
“I have asked that the police explain in detail every action taken from the time the matter was reported,” President Ali added, emphasizing the need for full transparency.
An internationally recognized pathologist, Dr. Shubhakar Karra Paul from Barbados, is being flown in to conduct an independent post-mortem examination.
Several people, including the owners of the Double Day Hotel, have been taken into custody as police continue to piece together the events that led to Adrianna’s death and the explosive aftermath that has left the Tuschen community in mourning and outrage.
