The highly anticipated Dominica International Airport is now over 40 percent complete and progressing ahead of schedule, according to Finance Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre. The update was delivered during his presentation of the National Budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
“Since the mobilization and commencement of construction of Dominica’s international airport, we have made substantial progress in transforming this long-awaited national priority into a reality,” Dr. McIntyre said. “The scale and pace of work on this project are unprecedented in our nation’s history.”
Civil works on the site are significantly advanced, with four major culverts — stretching more than 2,000 meters in total — already constructed to support proper drainage. The minister also reported that the leveling of the runway is expected to be completed by the end of December 2025.
Construction of the passenger terminal has begun, and upcoming works include the cargo facility, air traffic control tower, and rescue and firefighting services building. A tunnel will also be built beneath the runway to ensure safe and continuous access between the communities of Wesley and Woodford Hill.
To date, over $45 million in compensation has been paid to 235 property owners, and 47 new homes have been built — 31 of them directly by the Government.
“This transformative project remains on schedule and will serve as a catalyst for tourism, trade, and investment, reshaping Dominica’s economic landscape and global connectivity,” Dr. McIntyre added.
The $1 billion contract to build the international airport was signed in June 2021 between the Government of Dominica and Montreal Management Consultant Establishment (MMCE). The agreement marked the official start of construction at a ceremony held at Windsor Park Sports Stadium.
At the time, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed gratitude to the communities of Wesley, Woodford Hill, and Palm Tree for their support and promised citizens both locally and abroad that “nothing and no one” would stop the government from delivering the airport.
