CARICOM and US condemn threats to Haiti’s transitional government

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has issued a strong condemnation of reported threats by a coalition of criminal gangs in Haiti attempting to overthrow the country’s transitional government.

In a statement released over the weekend, CARICOM leaders labeled the threats as “completely unacceptable” and warned against any attempt to disrupt the transitional arrangements established by Haitian stakeholders.

“These arrangements were put in place to pave the way for free and fair elections by February 7, 2026, and to return Haiti to constitutional authority,” the statement read. CARICOM emphasized that any attempt to replace this process through force and violence would only deepen Haiti’s already dire humanitarian crisis.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently reported that over 1 million Haitians are now internally displaced, with nearly 60,000 more forced from their homes in the past month alone. CARICOM warned that continued violence would disproportionately impact vulnerable populations who are least equipped to protect themselves.

In light of the escalating threat, CARICOM confirmed it is in close consultation with Haitian authorities and international partners to urgently bolster security assistance. The regional bloc praised the ongoing efforts of Haitian security forces and the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission for working to restore order and safeguard citizens.

The United States echoed CARICOM’s stance in a press statement by U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, following discussions with CARICOM Chair and Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley. “The United States supports the statement by CARICOM condemning any actions to destabilize Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council,” Bruce stated, adding that Washington continues to back the Kenya-led MSS and regional efforts to stabilize the country.

Both CARICOM and the U.S. called on the international community, including the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS), to step up support for Haiti’s legitimate authorities as they confront the growing threat of gang violence.

CARICOM concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to closely monitoring the evolving crisis.
