Cayman Island’s former Deputy Premier, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, has become the new Premier of the British Overseas Territory.
This change in leadership follows a series of political events that have shaken the political landscape of the Cayman Islands.
The transition of power occurred in the aftermath of a motion of no confidence against the incumbent Premier, Wayne Panton, and his PACT coalition government.
The motion, which had threatened to destabilize the administration, was narrowly defeated, allowing Mr. Panton to retain his position temporarily.
Resignation of speaker paves the way for Panton’s new role
In a move aimed at maintaining stability and supporting the government in fulfilling its constitutional obligations, Speaker Katherine Ebanks-Wilks submitted her resignation.
As a result, Panton, now relieved of his role as Premier, will assume the position of Speaker of the Parliament, marking a significant shift in his political responsibilities.
